Today's dummy.... Me! Now with points pictures..
« on: August 22, 2009, 01:23:47 PM »
My '73 was not running very well.  I had a spare set of carbs that I totally dismantled and took great care putting back together (or so I thought).  I got the carbs on it and took it to the gas station to put gas in it.  It ran fantastic until it got hot; which is what it was doing before.  It misses under acceleration.  I got home and checked the timing.  It was spot on.  I needed to sync the carbs too with my Morgan.  I couldn't for the life of me get this thing sync'd.  Idle was all over the place.  It would rev up and stay revved up, sometimes at 4000 RPM!  I had to snap the throttle or twist it backwards for it to come down.  I tweaked and tweaked for what must have been almost 2 hours off and on.  I decided to pop off the top of a carb (slide cover?) to see if any were sticking.  Damn, I left the throttle slide bolts and the 7 mm bolt that holds the arm assembly loose ???  I planned on messing around with the needle positions and forgot all about it.  Once I got that ironed out everything worked great as far as the sync went.  My plugs were carboned up so I cleaned them up but also noticed my points are pitted.  Tiny little craters are in them.  Perhaps an ignition tune up will supply better spark for me and help with the plugs.  Anyway...  the dumb move of the day...

Are the points' craters so deep that a nail file wouldn't take them out?  Otherwise just replace them.

Here's how they look after a less than 5 mile ride.

Holy Shot Condensers, Batman!

Are those points new or freshly cleaned?  Do you know the history on the condensers?
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

5 miles after cleaning.  I even squeezed my brass brush from my rotary tool in there.  They were real nice except for the tiny pits.  I bought the engine from a guy a couple summers ago.  No clue on history...

*edit*  I did put more than 3000 miles on that engine though.  I thought the carbs were at fault so I cleaned up a spare rack I had the same thing happened.  The thought about taking the ignition parts off my very well running '72 crossed my mind but it gets harder and harder to mess with a  properly running bike.  I have some old parts coils, points, and condensors laying around too.  I may fool around with them...

We didn't put new pts in w/out new condensers on any in line 4s from that era, usually it was always new pts,new condensers as it should be with all pt/condenser ignitions.Bill

I just ebayed new points/condensors.  We'll see what happens.  I also have a junk set of coils I'm going to rewire as discussed in the FAQ...

New points come with a greasy coating of cosmolene to protect them. Although it will eventually burn off, it is FAR better to clean is off first, with acetone or something similar. Then this initial pitting is far, far less. This goo is a pretty good insulator, so much so that if someone installs new points with one of my Ignitions, and does not clean them, it has trouble trying to read the points for the spark.

Old condensors will also EAT new points. Mmmmm...  :P

Oh, and a Hondaman Ignition Module would be a definite plus!  It's not a requirement by any means as good 'ol points and condensers have worked GREAT for centuries!  (I think the Romans timed the spark on their chariots with them, could be wrong tho).

I have one and couldn't be happier with it.  Add one to your Christmas list if nothing else.

A,lways clean contact surfaces anytime you're there, sometimes cosmolene so heavy,no connection and like Hondaman said any left will cause problems.Bill
