Still having trouble.
« on: September 06, 2009, 04:25:49 AM »
My bike isn't running properly and I'm getting really p'ed off with it. I got it running in june, everything cool, then i had a pretty bad oil leak(now fixed) then 1+2 weren't firing, tested it yesterday it's only firing on #4.

Did a compression check this morning.

Test results  No.1  135 psi
                  No.2  120
                  No.3  110
                  No.4  150

This was done on a cold engine as it won't run properly to get it warm.I've got fuel on the plugs and a decent spark

Could this be the head gasket blown or piston ring trouble?

Cheers
Andy

Could be rings or valves.
Its not so low it wont run, just wont run properly
You did have throttle wide open when you did test?
 Plugs wet?
Could have carb problems as well?
 Remove carbs and clean them.
 Check valve adjustment.
Get a leakdown test done, then you can check general area (intake  and/or exhaust valves and/or rings, depending where air is leaking)

Hi Andy -

If she was running well prior to the oil leak repair, I'd guess that something went amiss during the repair job. If it affects 1 & 2, then it's probably not ignition related, as that would affect 1 & 4, 2 & 3 or all four cylinders.

IME, a blown head gasket wouldn't stop the engine from running, it would just make it messy; ditto with rings. Did you have to remove the head to repair the oil leak? If so, are you sure the valve timing is set correctly? You apparently have fuel in the cylinders, and spark at the plugs. If she won't run then they may not be arriving there at the correct times.

When I fixed the oil leak I needed to get to the pucks underneath the cam, as I didn't seal them. I'll have to double check everything's timed up right.

When I took the readings, I didn't have the throttle wide open, I didn't know you had to do this,  ::)  Is this to let air into the engine? I'll test it again tonight.

Is it possible your off a tooth on the valve timing? I think that may give you a false read on your compression.
Will some tell me where the gosh darn kill switch is!!!

Valve timing wont give variations on cylinders though, unless a valve got bent

Yea, your right, good point, the compression for individual cylinders wouldn't change. If the valve timing is off it would throw the carb sync and pretty much everything else off though...right? Kinda make sense, if the cam was removed it's a easy mistake to make.
