Brakes - Removing a stuck bolt cb750
« on: December 03, 2005, 04:28:20 PM »
I have read many posts about guys having trouble getting the piston out.  Anyone have any trouble removing the bolts that hold together the two halfs.  I removed 1 bolt today no problem and the other 1 was so stuck i about broke my knuckles trying to get the f$%%er out.  These bikes have a way of always throwing a curve ball at a guy.  The nice thing is I can walk away and come back.  I have an impact driver but dont know if you can get allen bolt bits.

Have you tried repeated, long soaking of a good penetrating oil? As I recall, these are fairly large hex's (sorry, too lazy to go out to the garage). You could also just give the proper fitting hex tool a good rap in there also just for shock value. I had to let mine soak overnight with penetrant, but they did come apart.

I have not tried a good soaking, thats worth a while, i think it an 8MM Hex.  I dont have the best hex set either, might want to get a much bigger one

One other thing to consider. I didn't have to resort to this myself, but aluminum expands and contracts about twice as much as steel. Maybe some repeated heating (hair dryer?) and cooling with penetrating oil in there might also help free things up. Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

Penetrating oil and allot of leverage. An old trick my Dad taught me was putting a decent lengthed pipe over the end of a wrench. The etxra leverage really helps with those old, hard to turn nuts and bolts. I have even, as of late, used a four foot section of PVC piping. There's allot of extra bend in thr PVC, but it did the job. (made me wonder which was going to break fiurst, the bolt or the pipe.  ;D  )

Be careful, though. Too much torque on too tight a bolt might cause it to break. Make sure you give it that good overnight soaking with the oil first.
