530 Chains.
« on: December 05, 2005, 05:02:30 PM »
Allways thought that the best way of lubing chains is to remove them and boil them in oil This sounds rather barbaric, but it is the only way I know that really works to the fact that the lubrication must get into the rollers.
I have just put a new  530H chain on my CB 750 which I soaked in a plastic bag full of 20-50SAE engine oil for two months. It is and has no tight spots , not like the last one was.

The old chain was virtually dry inside the rollers where I managed to remove a link from the end.
I have been what I called plastering Pressure pak chain lube onto the chain especially before a ride to Sydney and back 350ks. The spray on lube stuff simply does not get into the chaiin rollers at all from the evidence I have seen.

Dave,

have you ever heard of a product called link life ?

It is a solid graphite grease and comes in a flat tin about 3ins deep and about 12ins diameter.

Wash your chain off then place it on the grease with a wire through the end of the chain to get it out, then put the tin on the stove/gas ring/cooker.

when the grease melts and the chain has sunk remove from heat and hang the chain to drip into the tin.

Job done, refit chain, put lid on tin and store for next time.

I have had my tin about 15 years, it's good stuff.

Can you still buy that sort of stuff?

I used it 20 years ago, but can't find any now

It sounds like a lot of work to me. There are some very affective modern chain lubes. Best done with the chain warm after a ride, but not entirely necessary if it doesn't work out that way. Clean the chain. The lube is in a thin vehicle for application so it seeps into every plate facing and the rollers. The vehicle evaporates and leaves behind a very heavy grease.

Sam,  you never told us,
is it still available?

Back in the day, I used to do the chain in hot oil thing. My father was always burning something, twigs, tree limbs, trash or something so he just put an old cooking pan with an inch of motor oil over his fire and did it for me. Next day I put it back on the bike!

my vfr is also chain driven.  i use a product called 'chain-wax' - a spray on lubricant.  as stated, it's best to apply this to a warm chain - and it needs to go on very frequently (around every 300 miles).

chains are high maintenance - fact of life. not lubing it frequently is asking for a heap of problems - the least of which is having to replace it prematurely.
