por-15 question(s)
« on: December 05, 2005, 06:48:50 AM »
Looking to pick up some por-15 high temperature paint to use on both the engine and the exhaust headers (78 750F).

I'm wondering if their 'engine enamel' product is suitable for the headers as well or not.

I'd also like to know how well this stuff adheres to the surfaces (aluminum engine and the headers - which are chrome, but the chrome is fairly broken down).

I'll likely be using the same paint on my 99 VFR's exhaust components as well (all the way up to canister).

There are a number of threads on this.  Run a search on "VHT" or "Engine paint" etc and you should pick up most of them.

there is indeed a lot of good info about painting SOHC4 engines already on this site - but i'm really looking for some specific information about the por-15 'engine enamel' paint - if anyone has it.

i tried e-mailing them last week, but as yet have not obtained a response.

the engine enamel paint is listed under their high-temp paints - but they don't list its exact temp rating.  i'd like to know if it's suitable for both the engine and the headers (beaten up chromed steel) or if i'd need to use a different paint on the headers.

if anyone has experience with this specific product, let me know.

I have used the POR-15 engine enamel on engine cases, heads and cylinders.  The stuff is as advertised, though as nails and does brush on nicely.  I believe POR makes a special header paint but have not tried it.

You brush it on rather than spray?  ???

Hi Bob... Yeah, kinda weird huh?  You can do both but the manufacturer recommends brushing rather than spraying probably because the stuff is soooooo thick.  As I recall, thinning more than 10% is not a good thing.  My brush job looked good with no brush marks and I did thin about 10%.

i would like to spray it - apparently you can if you dilute it a bit (like you said, not more than 10%).

i'll have to call them and try to find out if the engine enamel can handle the heat of the headers - i'd rather not buy two different kinds of paint if i could avoid it.

Danny,
How much prep work was needed?
Jim.

I used POR-15 paint on my last racecar project , and it turned into a nightmare.
I bought the entire kit , from the etcher , down to the primer and the final "soup" like paint.
After almost passing out from the fumes , getting the paint on myself, and destroying my
garage floor , the underneath of the car , frame , and some small chassis parts were done.

Mid way thru that season , it all started to flake off  :o I ended up selling the car before I got
around to fixing it , but I am sure the guy who bought it had to sand all that crap off and re-do it with something
else. Reg-Ol rust-olem black does a much better job , is cheaper, and easier to work with...

This was not the high-heat paint , but the "hard as rock" chassis paint , which turned out to be crap. Total , Expensive crap !
As for your project , I would use Dupli-Color engine enamel outta a rattle can. I have had nothing but great
results with their products, can get them in a ton of different colors and gloss levels , and goes on clean.

My 2cents.....

I've had good luck with the stuff and didn't do a lot of surface prep at all.  Just a wash with isopropyl alcohol and I was off to the races.  Even painted over a slightly oily area just to see if it would stick.  In over a year, it hasn't come off yet....really...  Course I'm not hittin' the area with a pressure washer either.  Seems a lot tougher than VHT which I like a lot.  Of course, your results may vary... maybe I was just lucky.
