Electrex voltage regulator installation...
« on: December 05, 2005, 06:05:32 PM »
I had the cover off today and figured I'd take a couple of pics of my installation. It's shock mounted and has performed flawlessly for 3 years now.

Thanks! Yes, regulator/rectifier. It lists for about 120.00 from Parts Unlimited through a dealer.

Hey Mike, as you know electrical failure is common on the old GS Suzuki's, in fact I think that Electrex have made enough money from replacing Suzy regulator/rectifier assemblies they could give away the CB750 items for free, I bought one for my GS1000S and it's worked flawlessly in the 4 or so years I've had it, but what is the advantage over the stock Honda item? I know that you can adjust the voltage on the Honda OEM regulator, and I figured it was kinda good anyway? I've checked the charging on all my CB750's and they're all within spec, is there something that I don't know about? Please grace me with your wisdom, oh wise one! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Terry, I always thought the Suzuki problems were more based on the stator which ended up taking out the rec/reg though I'm sure the real problem is more a sum of all the parts involved with the charging system. I think the Electrex is better mostly because it eliminates the mechanical regulator....kind of like why is an electronic ignition better than points. Adjustment is unnecessary and operation more consistent. I also think the unit is less prone to damage secondary to vibration, water etc being a sealed unit.Personally I've had more problems diagnosing problems involving mechcanical relays than electronic relays. The electronic relays generally work or don't work and simple testing can reveal that. Mechanical relays are prone to sometimes I do work , sometimes I don't which is a real pain to trouble shoot.

That's an electronic regulator intended for use in a car. I don't have any gripe with that but I can't tell you what cars' regulators will work. It does not include a rectifier, but that's no big deal either. There are several ways you could go about either repairing an original or replacing it with electronic store components probably for less than $10.

I don't know why anyone who is building a rider would spend big money on a rectifier!!   ;)  ;D

It's only the regulator.  The original setup is a regulator and seperate rectifier.  My old regulator basically did nothing until about 3000 RPM.  The new one gives me 14.2 VDC from about 1800-2000 RPM right on up.  Nice and steady output.

A rectifier can be built for less than $5, or you can get a couple of bridges and make your own for around $10.  I have already "aquired" a three phase rectifier for future use.  It is a PRX 6 diode 50 amp rectifier.

The regulator is a KEM KVR502.  You can get one locally, just ask for a regulator for a 1976 Porsche 911.  I'm not sure what other cars it fits, but apparently quite a few since everyone stocks one.  Locally they are $20-30, so I ordered mine from JC Whitney for $10 along with some other parts.

If you search for KVR502 on this board you should find a thread with the instructions for installation.

Here's a few pictures:
