When you're not riding an animal but still making it go where you want it to, you're driving it.

I think it's because you're on the bike and in the car.  I know.  Many "go for a ride" in cars.  Especially Dogs.  I have to watch that I don't say the "R" word around my dog.  I also think it has to do with the recreational nature of bikes.  At least here in the U.S..

Its mainly because you cant sit "in" a motorcycle, you sit ON it, thus riding it.  A car you sit in therefore you are driving it.

I dont get how people can not understand its impossible to drive a bike, you have to ride it. just like you cant ride a car, but you can drive it.  its the simple crap that gets me though.
These bikes dont die, they hibernate until the right person wakes them up again.

That's funny Stan, I too have to be careful not to say the "R" word in front of my dog (she's a black Lab).
Once I do, she runs through the house like a bull in a china shop and once outside she runs circles around my van like 'Seabiscuit' until I can get her corraled into it.  :D :D
