Locktight on rodbolts?
« on: September 26, 2009, 03:44:17 PM »
Do I need to use locktight on my 750 rod bolts? If so will the blue locktight be sufficient?

Thanks.

I have no idea, other than to say my book called for loctite on the camchain sprocket. I used blue. Can't hurt at all.

I've never used loctite there.  I think that means that no manual ever told me to :)

Don't use anything stronger than blue if you want to be able to disassemble them in the future.

You don't need locktite on rod bolts but you should consider replacing them . They stretch when torqued and repeated torquing weakens them . There is a thread somewhere about using later f2 bolts . I did this with my re-build and they fit fine . Lube your bolts with oil before torquing.

I have several, just checked a couple and don't see any reference to using loctite on the rod bolts.

Here's a relevant quote from Hondaman:

The only place I use Loctite on these 750s: on used rod bolts, if they were disassembled. Use  blue, and sparingly. Also: 'feel' those bolts back in, as they take a bit of a curve after years of heat-treating, and should go back in the same way. You'll be able to tell which way is easier...  ::)

Nothing else in the engine needs it, if torqued to the right specs: 90-96 inch-lbs. on the 6mm bolts with 15mm or more threads, 200-210 inch-lbs on the 8mm bolts/nuts.
