bike eats oil.???????
« on: September 29, 2009, 12:44:20 AM »
OK did a long search and couldn't come up with anything on here or the web.   but my bike eats oil. Ive noticed this the past few months since it blows some smoke out of the exhaust and well I have to add oil every other week or so.   can anyone tell me why this is happening?  Im going to adjust the valves because they tick but I don't think that would cause it.  can someone help me out.  am I do for an engine rebuild or is it something simpler then that?   I want to get this fixed soon so I don't have to keep adding oil so much.
Keep it shinny side up.

Worn rings? Hows the compression?

I've had my bike back on the road for nearly a year now and it only just occured to me today to check the oil, it was just showing on the dip stick. :P
Basic check I know but you have so many other things going on with these bikes, I probably wouldn't have checked it even then but I was readjusting the clutch and was in the vacinity.

Lets see, bike uses oil, could be worn rings, could be worn valve guides, could be a leak.
Any oil spots where you park your bike?
Any drips after a ride?
You could be losing it from a leak as you ride and not notice it.

I just thought it was weird since I just changed the oil begining of las week.  Ill check compression and everything soon.  Their is a little leak at the shift shaft so maybe that's it but the leaks not that bad.

I think if it were leaking that badly you wouldn't be able to miss the puddle underneath your bike or your oil-soaked jeans after a ride.  Definitely do a compression check.

a compression check will not prove or disprove a ring problem. The oil control rings do not play much of a role in maintaining compression.

Smoke on starteup is guides, smoke while running is rings, smoke on decel is guides.

Plugs might also be oil fouled.

When you fill up after an oil change you need to wait for the oil filter to fill up before adding more, otherwise you get a false reading.
A slow fill with a few stops works best then leave it on main stand while you have a coffee then recheck.

I'm thinking maybe that was my problem. I didn't give the oil filter time to fillu up idk I added more oil and am going to run the bike and check it again in a few days.
