Any Members in Dallas Area Interested In Helping?
« on: October 04, 2009, 09:59:49 PM »
Hi I live in Dallas Texas, I just bought  1975 CB550K and I'm having a really tough time getting her running. The gas tank and petcock were completely gunked up with crap, I shot carb cleaner down the carbs and took the bike out for a spin. I only made it about a mile then had to push it home, it ran pretty good then just lost power. I took the carbs apart and cleaned them when I was putting them back on a slow jet broke off in the carb body. I went out and bought a new set of used gunked up carbs for $140 and switched out the body. I threw the carbs on my bike and now when I try to start it up it barely fires up and when it does it back fires like crazy and sounds terrible. I have white smoke coming out of the exhaust and black smoke around one of the exhaust heads. I also have gas pouring out of #1 and #2 carbs.

I'm super frustrated and feel like throwing the bike away  :'( I'd really appreciate if anyone in the Dallas area could give me a hand! I've tried to find some resources online on tuning my carbs, but the directions I have been able to udnerstand I have tried and the bike is still messing up!

RARGHRGRH!
(Thanks)

Did you clean the tank or just dump out the old gas?  That needs to be the first order of things.  You will need to use a degreaser and then if there is corrosion use an acid bath to get that out.  Check the tricks and tips for tank cleaning advice.  The leaking carbs could be caused by junk in the needle valve keeping it from seating and closing off the fuel flow.  Depending on how bad the carbs were it may take more than a little carb cleaner to get them clean.  There are  some small passageways/jets that are easily plugged and it may require a complete teardown and soaking.  No use trying to run it unless the carbs and tank are properly cleaned out.  I am not familiar with the 550 and it is a bit different than my 750 but there are quite a few here who could help you through it.

The carbs will need to be synced after they have been torn down.  Start by doing a search on the tricks and tips and the SOHC4 threads as there is plenty of info on cleaning and syncing these 550 carbs.  You should be able to find what you need if someone else does not come along who is familiar with them.
