350 wiring and carb help...
« on: October 14, 2009, 08:18:53 AM »
hey guys, not sure if this is allowed, but not sure either how quickly this could get lost in forum world unturned...  im working on 350f, typical cafe mods...  and last nite i was hookin up whats left of the stock harness.  im trying to work ona budget here, so before i spend 20 dollars in spools of wire to make my own harness, i need to make sure i can get the bike running.  last nite i snipped all the wires on the engine side of the clip coming form the alt/gen... the 7 wires (blue/red, green, white, three yellows and whatever that last one was)  anyhow, i cut them before i made sure i knew where they went into the tail end of the harness... i soldered in 9 inches of new wire... to get that ugly clip hidden under the seat in the belly pan i made to house all of it...before i resoldered it all back together, i called my old man, cause he was an electrical engineer way back, but he couldnt give me a solid answer which brings me here, to you...   i might have miss matched some of the three yellow wires that run from the alt/gen to the rectifier.   so my question is this... does it matter if some are crossed? or do i need to totally redo what i just did? and figure out where each yellow to yellow is routed thru the clip?

second question is about the carb float stoppers?  the part isnt labeled in my book, so i dont know what to call it specifically. sorry for my vague-ness.  first thought is, maybe i have the wrong part, but... the semi "u" or "Y" shaped part that comes off of the tube where the cylinder that houses the needle is, makes it so the float bowl needs to be pressed on in order to start threading the screws... does this sound right?   when i put the carb parts all back together and the bowl on, before i start screwing the bowl on, its resting on those wing looking things and thers about an 1/8 inch gap between the bowl and carb body...

thanks in advance and sorry for the lack of part names.. me idiot... alright, off to work... thanks heaps!

and heres the link to some photos...

I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter which yellow wire from the alternator goes to the yellow wires on the rectifier. Think of the alternator as an oil rig and the yellow wires as pipelines going to the oil refinery - the rectifier. The refinery isn't concerned with what 'oil' comes in from the 'rig' so long as it comes in through the three yellow 'pipelines'.

As for the carbs, I'm sure there are wiser people than me on here but I do have a vague memory of working on carbs that had this feature and having to apply a little presure to seat the bowl.

Generally speaking, if there is more than one wire of the same color connected to a device, like here on your alternator with it's 3 yellow, each wire has the same ' value' and may be connected in any order....so your o.k. with that.
Second part....your putting your floats in upside-down and pressin against the tab that normally limits the amount the float can 'drop' when you drain the bowl/ remove the bowl.
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,
If your sure it's an ignition problem; it's carbs....

That "thingy" you are describing is what hold the main jet in place.
yes, you'll need to press the bowl down onto it before you start tightening the bowl screws.  dont overtighten these as the bowls are soft metal and will strip easily.

Everything looks good in the carb. You do have to apply a little presure to get the float bowl screws started. Exercise caution because the threads in the carb body can strip easily.

Duuh, I should have looked at a pic. of your carbs first.....!!!    I can see how that tab sits against the bottom of the bowl now...............
