Topic: My OTHER '79 cb650 - Straight stock this time.

OMFG.......


I got a $500 beauty of a '79 cb650 yesterday.

Has a fugly fairing on it, the grab bar is off a cb650c(close but not quite right)

I'm thinking of snagging all the stocker bits(what few are left) off my heavily modified '79 to make this one completely stock.

The speedo is stock, and works, but the glass is stained with something from the inside of the glass. And to boot it's the 120 ('79 only) speedo.
Tach is great as well.
One thing that got me was how vibrant the red on the speedo and tach is.



Came with a aftermarket headlight bucket, seat cover, 2 quarts of oil, chain lube, all reciepts the last 3 PO's did I think.
Not a lit, but the thing has just over 20,000 miles on it(or the speedo does anyway)


The right (battery side) side cover is IMMACULATE.
The left one is sun faded with the clear peeling up.
Thinking of taking them both to a good painter, having him sand what he needs to, and re-spray some clear on both of them.

The tank ... I dunno so far.
The right side has rust on the bottom edge, but holds gas....
I think I might just de-rust it, and fill 'er with gas.
The paint job is as the left side cover is a bit.
You can see a bit of flaking of the clearcoat, but the colors are pretty good.
Worth just re-coating after a bit of fine grit wet sanding.



Frame has rust....but it's 30 years old, I expect some.


The exhaust....... OMFG.
EXCELENT.  Stock 4-2, EXCELLENT chrome.
Missing only 1 heat shield on the (?) right side.


I plan on raiding myu stash o parts for a stock headlight bucket
get the grab rail and tu8rn signals off the other '79
The front signals too.... this '79 has the mounts removed.
I might put the fairing on my other '79 (confused yet??)
Other than that, I might have to replace the wiring harness, depending on what happened inside that little black bag all the connections are in.
If they are cut and spliced, new harness.
If it's good, I'll be stoked.
I REALLY don't want to replace the wiring harness....

Tires are even good!
Font one was installed less than a year ago, the rear about 1 1/2 years ago.





I'm completely stoked... Now I have a bike to put those damned $240 rebuild kit costin bastard assed cb650 carbs on this bike....
I need a reason to use them to at least feel the money wasn't wasted...
And lord knows I don't want them on the overbored '79.....

The new '79 runs already with the carbs it has... but those ones I got on my shelf have all new rubber bits, gaskets, and are(or were when removed) synch'ed and running great.
Not only the left(#1) carb air cutoff diaphragm looks partially melted.
I bet all the rubber in those carbs are as old as that one.

And I cannot find any rust on the exhaust .... That good EXCELLENT!!!.
I know it's stock, it is stamped with the 426 part # they came stock with.

so its going to remain stock?  Like really really stock? Or stock with ignition, pods, wheels, progressive suspension, brake upgrade, X ring chain, 16/45 sprokets, cafe seat, drag bars, rearsets, big bore kit, CR carbs and paint right?  right?

Ahh man, I was gonna offer to do the paint for ya, then you had to go and throw the part about the painter being good, and that tosses me out of the running 

Geez, why can't I ever pick up running bikes for $500.

If the tank is totally shot, I still have that one, it'll need a dent pulled, but the tank is sound.

The tank is fairly good internally.
And it is completely dent free.
Amazing...


I am less amazed by the chainguard with the broken chain whip marks in it.

Still better than the one I have spare for a '79 swingarm...
Thats another thing....
One of the PO's replaced the passenger footpegs...
On the laft side used a too long bolt, actually rubbed INTO the swingarm quite a bit.

I guess I will have to use the powdercoated one.....
Another spare part gathering dust given new life.


I'm resigned to putting the fairing on my bored out '79 though.....
I unfortunately do not have a spare '79 headlight bucket holder(it's different than the c, sc and '80 on std 650 headlight holding system.)





And yes completely stock.
Stock carbs(ok I might put the emulsion tubes that have extra holes for the higher altitude I ride at)
stock seat(needs re-upholstered though)
stock brakes, rims, handlebars, footpegs, air filter, oil filter, as far as I am able to at least.

The swingarm I am going to put on(origionaly from a '79 650) no longer has the origional paint, it has been phosphated and powdercoated.....



Ok nearly as stock as I am capable ...... without buying any parts.
I got to wait until my wife gets over her being pissed about me not telling her I was buying  the bike......
She found out when she answered the phone and the seller was on the line....

A heated discussion arose later..... as I loaded up the van to go get it.

HAHA I was in a similar situation recently; I bought a bike for my younger brother. Called home, talked to dad and he said, "What bike? He never talked to me about a bike." So now I have a '79 CB650 and a '79 CM400T.

Hey Soos, will an 80 custom chainguard fit? I have a chrome one that would probably polish up pretty nice, It's your if it will fit and you want it.

not if the frame has the seat drop to it.

The '79's swingarm (and chainguard) are unique to that year(I have yet to see an '80 with the shorter swingarm)

E-bay is a good source a lot of the time for me... if I just wait and check every few days.
Not too much I have wanted motorcycle wise I can't find there or at local bike yards.

Nice find. I'm jealous people are finding them for 500$ and under it seems. I paid 1,400 for mine so
I feel I paid a little to much. Oh Well..

nonetheless.. im curious to see some pics of this one before and after, and I REALLY want to see how
the other one is coming about. I think you said something like your wife has the camera or something..
but since you got such a HUGE deal on that new 650, i think you should go buy a cheapo decent digital
camera for yourself.

I think I have it narrowed down to a few spots..... I'll find it soon I swear.





The kickstand even has the little metal loop to hook your foot on it still.
So far I have stripped the wrong grab bar, fairing, rear passenger footpegs.
Thankfully the PO that put the fairing on used connectors and no hack wiring done to the wiring harness.

I've scavenged off my modified '79:
the headlight assembly, (bracket to light)
grab bar.
Replaced them with the fairing the wrong grab bar(bent a little to give seat clearance)
Now the bike is officially fugly...
but thats for the other '79 thread.






I am pretty confident in being able to get this one bone stock.
Oh, and this bike has the 1 cb650 I have found with a smooth acting and un broken choke pull cable!


I might have to just ride this one on nice days.
Might be worth something running and bone stock VS the hack job of my other '79.



RE-assembly will be fast.
Although I need to source some origional driver footpegs.

And i'm being picky, but if they are bent I am not interested.
I do have what look to be origional ones, but they are bent.

And I am not quite done getting her back together yet.


Got the headlight brachet and bucket on, but am taking my time with the placement of the wire connectors.
I've got 3 pics of cb650 headlight bucket wiring placement(before being muddled with by anyone... hopefully.)
So I hope I can duplicate it as stock.

I have a few pages of "uncrating procedures" that were shipped to a local dealership.
Bought it on E-bay and should have gone and gotten it in person.
Their shop is like 15 blocks away.
But anyways I think it shows the headlight bucket as shipped as far as the wiring placement.
Interesting read, but for the $15 or so I paid for them I was kinda dissapointed.(so far)



I've got a line on the drivers footpegs, and the rest I think I have... not sure yet.


Tomorow morning I am putting the grab bar and ...
oh yeah.

Thats the other thing I need to get.
Turn signals.

The ones that came with the bike are buggered.
Looks like one of the PO's tapped a fewnon moving objects with them.

Even the set on my modified '79 are a bit buggered now.


I hope to find 2 sets full NOS eventually again(or some really pristine ones, one set black one set chrome.)

Well it's running pretty well as of tonight.

 

I have to put the airbox back on, and synch the carbs still.
But it idles well. Does seem to have a heavy tick on the #4 cylinder though.






I hate to say it, But I think I will end up fixing this one up prety, and selling it for a profit.
I've well and exhausted my wifes patience with the money......
I hope to be able to sell this one for about $1500 when I am done.



My racer project is going to need 2-3k more money if I do it as I want.
