Hey ,

I am in the hunt of a local (illinois) shop that deals strictly with older vintage bikes , I.E Honda CB's.
I am about 10 min outside Chicago , and have had no luck in finding a shop that is motivated, or for better
words "into" these bikes as much as I am.

I know the Cycle Exchange is in Wisconsion , but I am looking for some place alittle more local, to get parts from,
have them do projects I am unsure of , etc...Some place I can trust to get my scoot running strong and safe...

Anyone ???

Fred at Triple O Service in Chicago knows a LOT about the old CB 750's.  Very knowledgeable, knows where to get parts, and he can make you bike run better than it ever has.

Be advised that he is Not Cheap.  If you bring your bike to him he is going to fix EVERYTHING that is wrong with it until it runs to his satisfaction.  It'll run great, that's for sure.

There's also Jack at All-Brand on Addison.  Jack has a reputation for being a bit standoffish and at times surly.  But I know people that are very happy being his customers.

You might also try Johnny at MotoWorks on Western.  He's a good guy.  I've never had anything fixed there.  It's the former Bob's Motorcycle Works - I knew some people who were not happy with the service there a few years ago but I haven't heard anything recently.

If you call Fred at Triple O or Johnny at MotoWorks tell them you were referred to them by Big Bob.  It won't get you anything but it might enable me to guilt them into buying me a beer or something.

What kind of stuff do you need done to the thing?

BigBob----->

I can not thank you enough for the heads up on the shops. I knew their had to be atleast one shop
in the chi-town area that dealt with older bikes..

What does my bike need done ? Nothing major (that I know of) ;D
Just small things like re-build the front forks, dual disc setup, general odd's & end's, etc...
Things I am un-sure of doing myself....

Pull the forks off the bike yourself and bring them to Fred at Triple O.

As far as dual discs go, he can do that too.  If you want to wait until it's a little warmer I might be persuaded (i.e. Beer) to help you through that one myself.

Don't know how far you are willing to travel but Cycle tech in Rockford has a great bunch of guys that work on these bikes and they have all kinds of parts you just have to be willing to digg a little.

I suppose it's a good thing that I do all of my own work. Half of the snot-nosed punks probably don't even know what a SOHC is let alone born when they still ruled the road.

I get my parts through beaver damn honda online... Only thing I let someone else do to my bike was balance my tires after I mounted them.

Depends on what is wrong with your bike; stock bikes are easier to diagnose as opposed to modded.

I never went for help.  I was really frustrated and needed some sort of back-up plan if my own skills didn't pull through.

I just started dealing with a shop in Downers called M&R Cycle. So far they seem ok. Their parts prices aren't outrageous, but I haven't really had them do anything to the bike (I do most of my own work). The only thing I've shopped them around for is carb sync'ing and they quoted me $60???

I'll keep you updated as I also need to find a source for tires, mounting and balancing soon...

If anyone needs tires mounted I've got a guy who will do the job.  You bring your new tires and your wheels, he takes care of it from there.  You have to take away your old tires when you leave.  He does a quality job, mounted and balanced, for $20 per wheel.

That's right.  Only 20 bucks.

Email or PM for contact info.  He's in Chicago, near west side.

Big Bob's hook up came through perfectly.  Tires mounted and balanced in about a 1/2 hour.  Great guys and a great shop!  I think I just became a permanent customer  ;D  Afterwords went out to meet some of the ChiVinMoto guys, very nice people and really welcoming!

I'm glad it worked out for you, both Norm's tire changing service and hanging out with the ChiVinMoto crowd.  Sorry I couldn't hang around later but the alarm goes off at 5:40am and that's harder to deal with the older I get.

During the summer there are days when it goes off at 4:30.  That's just plain ugly.
