Harley has a big chunk of Lehman Trikes of Spearfish, SD where their's are now produced. About 20 miles west of Sturgis.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

While evryone admires Buell and you would like to see one, would you plunk down the cash to buy one. That is the problem, people were not buying them.

I did and it has been a great bike.. I have 20k on it and the only thing I have had to replace was the ECM (Excluding typical mantenance). To be honest if you want a great city\commuter\street hooligan bike then you really need to be looking at a buell right now cause of the deals that can be had.

In all the news and discussion of H-D and Buell, I just found this interesting tidbit:

"As other media reports, this means that 80 production jobs and 100 administrative jobs will be lost just before Christmas..."

Anytime you've got more support or administrative people than productive workers, you've got a backassed organization.

As for the extra-drastic effect of the firings and their timing, one can only hope that Harley will step up and cover these loyal workers like Mr. Aaron Feuerstein of Malden Mills did when disaster struck:  http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/07/03/60minutes/main561656.shtml

Besides buell escaping HD that is probably the only other comforting news I have heard from all this. From what I have heard from a flat out great souce is that all the employees while it sucks they are getting laid off are getting great packages. Now that doesnt make things all peach but its good the know that these workers are cover for a while.

I know it seems weird to us but I just talked with my Dad (a HD lifer) and according to all the dealerships he's talked to the only bikes that sell are the big tanks. All their touring models like the Road Kings are what sell best. The way I always figured it was that if you're buying a HD it's because you want a big loud touring bike.
I'm sure at some point all the doctors/Lawyers buying $20k touring models will dry up for HD but right now it's full steam ahead.

I hope Buell can actually use this as a positive situation and get out from under the HD umbrella. I also hope MV Augusta gets bought by some body that will keep that brand going.

Yeah, the 2010 lineup is a little... odd.  If you want to attract young, new riders, adding a third wheel to your bikes is probably not the best move.

They brought back the Wide Glide, but got rid of the Low Rider.  I think the Dyna models are probably their best hope at this point, but they don't seem to know what to do with them.  I guess the Softtails bring in more money, but those days are probably over.  Sorry guys, no one likes the Rocker.

I think the most interesting bikes are in the Sportster family - the Iron 883 and Nightster are both good looking bikes, and the XR1200 is downright cool.  But they have a stigma about them of being "chick bikes" (the V-Rods have a related problem), and I don't know why H-D has so little control over their brand.  Don't they have a-holes in suits to handle the marketing?  Are they really going to let a bunch of RUBs sh*t on an entire line of their motorcycles?

The real problem, though, is price - is anyone really in the market for a $16000 motorcycle these days?  Especially now, when the re-sale market is favoring buyers as much as it is - why go to a showroom and pay $10k more than you have to for essentially the same bike?
One day, I will put up a signature.

Hahaha, yeah those are just plain awkward and weird looking. Nice try HD but they is ugly.

I have seen a lot of them around though oddly enough.

I want a XR1200 and I checked a local dealer on price. It sounds like they can can be had for less than $10k if you know how to haggle.

Yeah, I pretended to have the money and plan of purchasing a XR1200 and the guy said he'd pull off around 10% if I were ready to buy right then. If I had the money I might have done it. With taxes and stuff it would have been around 10k.

The one at the local dealer had a sticker on it that said $10,995. I think the list is MSRP and dealers usually come in a little below that on their sticker and then while the economy is in the toilet they are willing to haggle.
