Topic: new cylinder stud snapped??!!!???

I've looked all over the site for a post on this topic and found nothing (searched my self to death) so I wanted to know if anyone else has had a new HD cylinder stud snap @20lb of torque not even the full 22lb thats recommended.  It was the 2nd in the sequence and now I dont trust the other 15 studs.  I still have the original studs and was thinking about using one of them rather than a whole new set at $80 .  Does that sound like a defective stud?

Any info on how that would affect my rebuild would be helpful or any suggestions as to the torque I should use on the HD's considering one would be a stock stud.  Needless to say I have an injured toe from the swift kick I delivered to the nearest heavy object.  I have a 76 cb750 k3 if that makes a difference and the studs came from cyclex.

It is very unusual for that to happen.
It would normally take a lot more than 20 ft/lbs to snap one.
If you have a close look at where the stud snapped, it will either be a clean break all the way across or if there is a fault with it you should be able to see some different discolouration in the metal.
Usually darker around the outside edge of the break and  the rest towards the centre a lighter colour.
Either way it would be better to keep a full set of HD studs on the job.
Cyclex are a good mob to deal with.
I think the best thing to do is to contact them and explain what has happened and they may be able to supply you with a replacement stud.

Looks like it snapped about 7 threads from the top roughly 60% across the stud then shot down about 3 threads to brake off completely.  I have dealt with cyclex for several parts and have a good repore with them so i'm thinking I'll give em a call once the sun comes up.  It just amazed me because i hear so much about the APE studs being so strong and the others held up so well I was shocked when it happened.  Thanx for the input

I'd like to think that CycleX or Big Jay (APE) will come through for you. Was the hole clean and DRY?

 I have had this happen to me but it was a bottom end stud. I was torquing down the nut (I use 3 stages) and on the final stage, probably at around 20lbs, the stud snapped diagonally. It sucked to be honest as the torque wrench went flying and i cut my arm on the jagged end of the stud. Dynoman replaced the stud no problem BUT my point is it has happened to me too.

Yeah,sh*t happens,just sucks to be on the short end,Ken @ CycleX sure to come thru(good people there),but definitely use H/D studs.Bill

At least it broke near the top I suppose, and not flush with the case.

Thanx for all the feedback I called cyclex and they sent me a replacement at no charge.   They also said they have a bunch of new stuff coming out by the end of the year.  So by the time my toe heals up I should be able to put the engine in the frame.  thanx again!

I tried to post a pic of the stud but my carea still doesnt work on its 8th set of batteries about $120 worth of batteries in a $800 camera thats 4 months old.  Needless to say I'm conditioned to delays and disappointment. I did get my rims sandblasted and painted in the meantime.

I wonder what they're average out-of-box-failure (still birth) rates are on these studs?  Two people having failure reports in this size a community is more than I'd expect for this.

That did go through my mind too.
If 2 that we know of have sheared at around 20lb, how are the others that have taken the correct torque hanging in?
Are they ok or just ok?

got the new stud and installed no breaks so lets just hope it was a fluke or two flukes total if thats possible

who is the actual manufacturer of the studs? i wonder if it would do any good to just ask them about these failures, if they would give a truthful answer?

I purchased a set of HD studs from Cyclex a bit over 2 years ago with some other parts and they supplied APE studs.
No problem at all with those.
Maybe they have another offshore supplier now.
I know in the automotive game here in Oz that a lot of parts come in from SE Asia and beyond.
The cost of some of these parts landed here really makes you wonder how anybody can make a dollar.
The importers have shipping and handling costs before they make anything out of it.
25 years ago we would be paying a little bit more for items manufactured here and now all of those years later we can buy those same items imported cheaper.
I suppose the bottom line is working for 20 dollars an hour or 20 cents an hour as an example and also the quality control thing.

I agree fully with Mick, thru voxonda.com I import and sell parts. Price is dictated more by taxes and shipping then by manufacturing today it seems.
