Author Topic: Got it rideable, now I am stripping it down!?!?!?! (Read 12796 times)

Ok, so I got this 78 cb750 for $100. With another $130 I was riding(albeit without a front brake). So what do I do? decide to tear it all the way down to paint everything in preparation of my rebuild. I got to do this on the cheap, so nothing fancy here. But I am going to take my time and make sure everything is done to the best of my abilities. I am planning a cafe style racer with super bike bars, rear sets, solo seat and tail, and a small fairing. Keeping it white because its been nicknamed the Vanilla Gorilla.
So, here is a before...

And after a couple of hours...

Opinions... For the frame, keep it black, gold, or red? Black looks good anywhere, gold is classic cafe, and red... well I think that would definitely add some character! The motor is going to be black and dark grey. So let me know what you think and I will keep you all up to date. Also going to be selling some stuff I won't need... Ill update with a link.

do the frame in a cross between gold and black, like bronze color. that would set off the white.
the only thing you gotta worry about is an accent color, maybe a gold accent color for the caliper, little brackets, and rear shock bodies.

if you do black and white, baby blue pin striping always looks classic.

The exhaust sounds good but it is a little beat up. I am going to wrap the headers and repaint the muffler. Eventually I would like a yoshi setup like I have seen on Carpy's site, but for now this one will work! We will see what they have out there for the frame. Got to get that motor out so I can start cleaning, grind off some tabs and stuff, then put down a couple of coats...

tell you what, if you do end up getting that carpy pipe i'd like to buy the exhaust you have now.

Alright, guys... been a little while since my last post... Got the Gorilla all stripped down for paint. It is weird looking at a frame and motor and front end sitting there on the floor. I saw a post here where a guy painted is motor assembled. Is this an acceptable practice? I would have though you would want it broken down, but if I can save some time(and money), I am all for it. I was looking at doing two colors on the motor, but one would be ok with me! Hopefully going to be painting the frame, swing arm, and fork lowers soon. I will post pics when done. For now its all degreaser and rags... BTW any good way to get the motor prepped for paint? Looking forward to seeing it all done... If anyone has any parts that would work for a cafe style bike, let me know!

to clean my motor I used auto store degreaser, a pressure washer and repeat.

then about 3-4 cans of starting fluid to make sure there was NO grease or oil left on the motor.

Finally got a couple of cans of Rustoleum Hammered... What do you guys think??? Two more cans should get the rest of the stuff I need to paint and any touch ups... Next stop, motor!

Well my girlfriend gave me a angle grinder for Christmas, and since I have a cafe tail on order, I had no choice to start hacking away... Yeah right... Couldn't wait to pull those passenger peg mounts off! I really am happy with how the frame looks now. Will have to touch up the paint, but that's quick and easy!!! I am done for the day though, the lady friend is putting the finishing touches on our daughter's Christmas present, so I have to get the youngin out of the house for a while. We are going to go look at a 74 750k and a parts bike(i think 77-78k), both for $500 with lots of extra stuff... She has the sickness as bad as me!!! Guess the acorn really doesn't fall far from the tree...

Your bike is a keeper if I find one in that shape I am going to ride first. As soon as I learned to put pic on the site will show the bike I should have cranked and run first.

Upload your pics to photobucket, or somewhere similar(I use my Facebook account). Then when youre posting, have two browser windows open, one to the post your making and one on your photo. Appreciated, grandelatte. Next week I will be mocking up the tail. Looking forward to that, for sure!! Come spring there will be one freaking sweet 78 K runnin around Nacogdoches, and a 74 getting brought back!

Yeah it was supposed to ship yesterday, so I should hopefully have it early next week! Hope it isnt too long though... 29in(with 17in seat) should be about as long as the stock seat. Course I am a big guy, so I will probably appreciate the room!

I like the Hammered line of paints, it helps to hide irregularities in the metal.
