Scored a free car
« on: November 02, 2009, 12:30:55 AM »
I picked up a 1980 Subaru last week for free. "No keys but there is title" the ad read, after getting home I realized they gave me a title for an 84 Subaru, I called them back to let them know and give them a chance to find the proper title.  It has been sitting since '93 :P  I freed the lock cylinder from the column and pulled the switch from the back of it and was able to energize the electrical system with my house key.  I pulled off the air cleaner and the carb was corroded pretty bad so I shot it full of carb cleaner and got most of the linkage freed up, poured some gas down it's throat, turned my house key a few times and after a few sputters it comes to life and runs damn smooth.  I found a rebuildable carb for $20.00 plus postage and the rebuild kits are around $20.00.  As we all know free is usually a euphemism for "your gonna have to do some bull#$%* work to get it" and this case was no different.  After dragging a broke down snow blower half way across their property, nearly killing my self lifting the tongue of small albeit loaded trailer up onto some wood blocks so it could be hitched to a truck. And then hauling a crate of wood scraps out of the way the car was finally clear enough to back a tow truck in.  Needless to say I was a little torqued when the title didn't match up, I called the woman posted the ad and let her know what was up, she wanted me to bring the title back and give her the vin so she could match it up to a title.  I told her I was out money($65.00) for the tow and had a sore back and she signed a title over to me, and to call me when she found the other title.

I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt but I'm not just handing over the title until I have the proper one in my hand.  If the correct title doesn't materialize I'll rattle their cage and threaten to take possession of the 84 Subaru.  What would you guys do in this situation?

Without the proper title it could be a major hassle and if she really does not come through with the proper title you could always abandon the car in a handicapped parking spot and let the law come down on the "legal owners" of said vehicle. ;D  Without the proper title you are stuck with a worthless piece of junk that may even be hard to pawn off on a junkyard.

On another note I had two an 83 wagon and an 84 coupe and the engines were indestructible.  The bodies and frames went to hell long before the engines.

I've got the registered owners name and address, if it comes down to it I'll strip the rear end assembly and drop it off at the property I picked up the car up from.  Like I said I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt.  For now. 8)

aw man, i envy you. i had an 81 subaru gl, 4 door sedan, 4 wheel drive. if i hadnt nit a moose with it i'd likely still be driving it today. what a great car, and those boxer motors will never die. the only bad this was when i had to have the "y" pipe replaced, back in 88 it cost me something like 500 dollars. great LOOKING cars too. mine was silver with blue pinstriping and blue velour interior, it even had it's factory tape deck still. you probably dont want that car, i'll take it off your hands for you   ;D

I can only hope that my '96 wagon is still running in another 15 years. :)

i think that, other than the 32 ford coupes and vw beetles those 80's subarus are my favourite car ever.

I learned to drive legally in an 83 gl wagon 2wd. Light blue dk blue interior. We had a 78 before that silver. Remember the door buzzer? Ding dong ..... One was abandoned in a sand pit with old blazer wheels welded to it and fenders cut/beaten out to fit them. I think it only had second gear ? If its 4 wheel drive thats a thought until a flat tire.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

Ultimately I will be putting a 6" lift on this bugger, just want to shake out the bugs first.  I found a factory brush guard for the front on craigslist tonight, just waiting to hear back from the guy.  I'm going ouy tonight to pick up a set of freebie wheels to mount a set of studs to. YEEE HAWWW!
