Pulled the valves, 550K
« on: December 18, 2005, 01:06:00 PM »
Well, I took the plunge and pulled the valves on my 74 CB550.

Will measure them later tonight, need to borrow the calipers from Dad.

The intake look good, seating well, the exhaust valves on the other hand look like toast.  1, 2, and 3 seating, but not by much, number 4 had a spot where you could see the leak.  I'm going to check with Honda tomorrow, thought some one else might know of some where else to pick them up.

CMS carries them, but I think only full sets and about $160 U.S.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Found the ones at CMS, $186 CAD. :o

My $500 bike is starting to be labour of love, just not love of the pocket book ;D

I'm thinking that the cylenders will need done as well as new rings.

Seems that the sum total of all the parts will never come close to the value of the bike as a whole.  But at least I'll have my ride ;D

Why don't you see if ElCheapo or (someone else if he doesn't) has a good used head. Most times that I've taken these heads apart the valves looked pretty good. There are a few opnline wreckers also.
 Last resort fleabay of course.

It has to be a labor of love! I've got $2100.00 in mine. I couldn't sell it for anything near that.

The worst part is that "I got the Fever" for CBs.  I had a 75 CB550 that I was given, $0.00, then sold it 3 years later for $600.  Dumiest mistake I ever did so.........
Though the $$ into this one and keep it.  Then I'll have to get a 350 or 400 for the wife, I don't think I can drop the seat far enough for her to be able to learn to ride.

James

PS. I'm starting to think the intake valves were done at some point, they look too good compaired to the exhaust.

I've got a 500 topend anyone know if they are the same valves? If not you might check with Faust as he just came into a 550.

500 and 550 are the same but try DSS he did list pattern exhaust valves at £10 each plus shipping

.... and you still need to buy valves, springs and all the other hardware.
