Turn Signal/Brake Light Help
« on: November 11, 2009, 07:26:42 AM »
One change that I made to my CB350F was to replace the rear yellow turn signals with red turn signal and brake combination lights.  I did this to have more lights on my rear when I brake.  Now I want to do the same to my 73 CB750.  I finally found the red lenses on Ebay but I need to know where I could find the dual element contact/reflectors so I can use the dual element bulbs.  Does ANYONE know where I could find these reflectors or the element contacts?  It just screws in and out with 2 screws.

Thanks in Advance...

That turn signal pictured actually looks like an old Yamaha turn signal(R5/RD).
The front turn signals for the K usually have dual element bulbs. I have used them on the back to have the rear turns used as running lights also.

+1

That's what I'd do if I were switching to running lights on the rear.  Make sure you get the front lights from a later K, though.  Earlier ones (at least K0 - K1) don't have front running lights.

Shazam! (as Gomer Pyle would say) You two guys are GREAT.  I thought you were pulling my leg and I went out and opened the front turn signal on the K3 and voila a dual bulb contact.  Just one question though - What did Honda use the dual bulb setup for?  Was that where it was connected to the 2nd slot on the ignition key and would also come on with the tail light if you used this "parking" position on the ignition switch and removed the key or were they used for something else?

If your front indicator lights don't currently act as running lights, it may be just because you don't have dual element bulbs in them.  On a bike with stock running lights in the front (no civilian USA model sohc4 that I know of has stock rear running lights, which would have to be red to be legal), they will come on any time the headlight is on, which should be any time the ignition is on.

The park position on the key switch just turns the tail light on.

The front running lights are a different circuit and only have power with the ignition on.

Well this gets better and better.  If the K3 had front running lights I can now use those wires to hook up some fog lights like the Harleys have which would make me be seen better from the front.  Guess no one sells lights that connect to the headlight bucket ears though.

And in adding fog lights, you come to the point where you don't have enough current to charge the battery.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

Didn't think about that one....

Thanks for letting me know before I wasted my day searching for fog lights.

Here's a question - I've searched around for this, and didn't find the answer, but decided not to ask until I was ready to actually make the change.  However, this seems like a natural segue...

What if a guy (like me!) wanted to set up his rear turn signals, with red lenses, to act as running/brake/turn signals? Kind of like the Nightster or Iron 883, or, you know, the average car?  Would I have to set up some kind of relay, or are there triple-filament setups I could use?

Perhaps I'm revealing my ignorance of the wiring back there. I have a lot of that - ignorance - but it's never stopped me before.

I have a 76 750F, if that makes a difference.

Thanks,
Mac

You need a "3-wire" trailer adapter.  You can pick one up at any U-Haul outlet (or similar) for ~$20.

Here's one: http://www.greenpointmarine.com/catalog/3-wire-to-2-wire-heavy-duty-solid-state-tail-light-converter-12195.htm

If I forgot to state it in my post, I'm probably talking about a 1976 CB550K...
