Simpson,
Here are some shots of my lower front attachment struts.
I don't know how they would work on a 4/4 system as mine is aftermarlet 4/1.
I ended up making my own rear attachment struts to narrow the bags to the bike, but the front lower ones are stock as far as I know.

Thanks a million for posting the shots! I heard of that support but never seen it. The 4/4 makes it a tad more tricky to route the support. Have to think about it some more.  ::)

Okay...

So as I approach 25k the oil leak from the head went away but has come back 2 fold.
This winter I am forced to do a top end re-build.


This is my list of upgrades or fixes I'm hoping to accomplish.

-Top end rebuild replacing all seals, gaskets and piston rings (cylinder hone, valve lap etc) - Most parts ordered
-Seal engine tight for future synth oil - Investigating
-Refinish external surface of forks - Waiting on Fork dismantle, service arranged
-Upgrade forks with progressive springs - Ordered!
-Update Wheels with new Honda spokes - Ordered!
-Update cam chain train with Honda original parts  - Ordered!
-Fix random hole in unicorn tree from Previous owner - Weld and powder coat Investigation
-Consider Handlebar vibration update - Investigating

I think the lesson here is that if you already have the engine out you might as well fix it. You sure have a great bike. I am sure it will give you many more years of service.

Very true, I should of rebuilt this engine when I had it out last time.
I desperately wanted it to be an unspoiled machine, meaning before I touched it no one has even opened the tappet valve covers.
The idea of seeing how many miles it could run on just good maintenance was too tempting.

Runs great now but the oil leak is getting bad.
Before pulling it apart couple weeks ago the compression measured within about 3% of each other. :)
It was a smooth sounding machine.

Since I'll be in there, might as well update several weak points line tensioner train, seals and what have you...

On a side note, I definitely getting more proficient taking these things apart and it gives me a chance to give it a good cleaning. :)

On a side note, I will not re-install the saddle bags. My wife and I will soon be buying a Goldwing within the next 1-2 years.
This gives me an opportunity to shine up refinish parts and move towards the classic configuration.
Until then we will just use the detachable top case or use a backpack for trips.

Required paint remover, high pressure washer and 3M gasket remover tool to fully clean surfaces.

It's not bad, I use the bike for a lot of trips with my wife. So any helper, like the throttle lock is nice.

Current State:

Cylinder honed, valve inspection in process.
Concerns on cylinder #1 exhaust wear. Valve seems to have slightly more play.

I replaced my 550 with a vintage ('77) Goldwing with a Vetter SS and Bates bags/trunk last Fall. One highway ride and I understood why they are so beloved as touring bikes and really came to appreciate the benefits of a dresser.

The engine is amazingly smooth. I do want another SOHC4 as a commuter around town bike, but I plan on riding the wheels off the 'Wing this year.

-Update cam chain train with Honda original parts
*All new Honda parts received

Had to have a machine shop tig fill a tapped hole in the upper portion of the unicorn area.

Okay parts are starting to arrive, so the bike can hopefully be put back together.  ;D

Just got the rims back from the chrome platers, the new NOS rotor came in the mail and the spokes I've had for awhile.\

No, I've never laced up a rim and it shows.

Laced and trued last Saturday. Not perfect but seems to be good enough.
Did myself during Rainy afternoon.

Triple tree back, little upset the cost of doing this one part along with some imperfections.

-Forks arrived back from california and assembled
-Wheels laced, trued, with new modern road tires front and back
-Triple Tree ready to go
-Head should being coming home soon!

Actually they are the Duro brand. After trying them out, I actually like them. Tire life is great and traction seem fine.

Really enjoying this thread and very good photos. What did you do to the front forks - I may have missed it.

Glad you asked! Just got a new camera yesterday and I'l about to post a bunch.  :D
The forks were dis-assembled, cleaned, the casings were refinished by a guy in CA and the springs updated with hyperpro progressive.

Note the "My CB750 Book" in the back ground.
