Thinking of going to a 1.85 x 17 front wheel
« on: November 17, 2009, 02:57:51 PM »
sohc 750: Are there any problems or disadvantages with doing this? Can the speedo gear be changed to work with a 17" wheel? How wide a front tire could I run with this rim?
Thanks for any ideas.

If your going 17" why go so narrow on rim?
1.85rim has max tyre size around 3.50" although 3.25 would be better.
A modern120 tyre needs a 3.00 rim but it's more usual to see them on 3.50"rim

You are still limited by clearance issues with the mounts for brakes and fender.

A 1.85 rim is made for 90 (maximum) tires. Smaller, really.

This sounds like a small wheel for a sohc4, really. What bike is this for?

Ah, I came across a 1.85x17 alloy rim for cheap and i though maybe I could use it, but I think I'll hold out for a 2.85.
Is the max front tire size with clearance a 120?

Thanks!

Watch out for some serious head shake if your over all diameter get's to small. Better use a steering dampener, but if it is a "look at Me" bike..go for it! Steering head angle might be getting a bit steep with a very small diameter wheel.

220...221, whatever it takes.

I have never tried a 120 front on a 750.
Not sure if it's possible with stock fender on and such. 120 is wiiiide.
No.

So what's the max then, 100 or 110? Couldn't I put a 100/90 on that 1.85 x 17 rim?

Here ya go Ben, this guy's in Boston even.... he's got a 120/80-17 up front with stock brakes and fender.

And I think MCRider is still going with a 17" front too, maybe he'll chime in with some of his findings.

Cheers.

Thanks Alan,
I'll look forward to speaking with you tomorrow eve over some Cervezas and guacamole. After seeing how small the 17 looks on there, I think I might go stock or 18" alloy, but I want to see what my tire and rim options are.

I have a WM3x18" genuine Boranni rim off back of CB750, not sure if I want to sell it though as will cost too much to replace if I ever get round to swapping front rim on 550 or building it into 'new' hub (it has 19" Boranni at present)
