newbie throttle cable change problem
« on: November 20, 2009, 01:53:57 PM »
i've been tinkering away on my bike for a while now, learning a tonne from the forums...

yesterday my bike (80 cb650) sputtered out on the highway. i pulled off, and as i was trying to get it going again the throttle cable snapped. i imagine that it's imminent failure was why it died in the first place (hope).

i have a full throttle assembly with cables from my parts bike, so i went home to get them.

i did a bit of reading and installed the pull cable first. the problem is that in position and adjusted with the most slack possible it still keeps the throttle 3/4 open. because of this, of course, i can't get the return cable on.

i've read alot of posts about difficulty changing the cables, and have followed suggestions, but nobody seems to have finished their posts with "oh, i did it, and the trick was...."

i know i'm doing something wrong...is there a trick? am i not swearing loud enough?

Either the cable is too short.......or not installed correctly.  Maybe the parts bike had flat bars!  If the pull cable is installed correctly, all should work fine.  The push cable is for safety in case the return spring were to fail.

when laid end to end the cables appear to be the same length (though of course it is hard to tell with one broken). the casings are definitely the same length, and the cables appear to be.  i'm using the bars from the parts bike on this bike...i wonder if i have the routing correct, though i followed the same path way as best i could, and removed only one cable at a time. the new (to me) cables seem to move freely in their housings. i'm still stumped but am going to keep trying....

ooops...apparently the parts bike is an 81 and the cable housing is the same length, but not the cable. had to cut the housing back a bit, back on the road....
