small oil seepage problem
« on: November 24, 2009, 04:32:05 PM »
I'm a proud owner of a 76 cb 750. It takes me back to my youth! I've had the bike about 3 weeks and put about 300 pampered miles on it, you know just taking it easy enjoy the bike and getting use to it and not running over about 65 mph and keeping rpms between 4 and 5 grand. Well the other day I decided to tach her on up a little bit on a open stretch of road just to see how it felt and how
the bike handled it. I ran up to 90 or so before backing out of it [ fast enough for this 52 year old] No problem bike ran great!!! Got back to the house and looking over the bike like I always do after riding it checking for any problems when I noticed very small amount of oil seepage on Lt.Frt and Rt. Frt of head at head gasket. I also had some oil dots on my left pant leg. The bike has 17000 miles and I know these years of 750's are famous for headgasket leaks and I know the higher you tach the higher the oil presure. No oil leaks at lower speeds and rpms. Should I replace headgasket because I do like to get on it every now and than or should I just stay out of the throttle!!!

You will receive a lot of good answers to your question. If you really had oil on your pants the reason for your oil leak is the rubber pucks under the cam holders. The head gasket seldom leaks that much. Most experienced people will advise you to do a top end rebuild with rings, valve lap and all new gaskets. It is not that hard and you will have a new running engine. Do a search for "pucks" and you will see many posts about what is going on. Dan

I got over 10,000 miles (started out at around 28,000 miles on it at time of purchase) on my 78K routinely cruseing about 90 miles to and from LA at around 80 - 105 mph...it has just now started leaking. and due to my new found transmission issues, I believe I will be rebuilding both the tranny and the top end)...I basically rev the crap out of it all the time
