1978 750f3 front brake parts missing ?
« on: November 30, 2009, 07:20:13 PM »
Im tearing into these front calipers. I have three of the metal pieces touching my finger but cant find them on a parts fiche. Also missing are (shim a and shim b) They look like they go behind the pad between the piston and pad? I assume I need to order them with my new piston seals. What are the metal pieces touching my finger? Are they obsolete? Does anyone have an extra? I almost tossed the pads til I priced them. Thanks for some advice.

Shim A goes between the pad and the piston its P.N. 45114-371-006

If memory serves the B pad is for the other side caliper (Left and Right)

Shim A goes with Caliper P.N 45110-410-006 or the Left

Shim B goes with Caliper P.N. 45201-442-701 or the Right

Mirror image thing

I scratched my head over that one too.

The little clips are refered to as retainers....

If it helps thier P.N 45112-410-006  on the CBX and the GL1000

I believe its exactly the same number on the 750 Supersport....I have sets for all three bikes and they look the same.

Thanks Kghost. It makes sense now. Where did you get the retainers P.N.? My parts fiche from here doesnt list them.
Do you have a better parts fiche?

I'm just shifty....I pulled the numbers from my vast store of Knowledge....... ;)

No not really I just remember wondering what the hell all the shims were for.

I also mounted CBX calipers on my Cafe....piston is bigger but the calipers are the same and so are the shims.

Plus I had a 78 GL1000 Goldwing with the same brakes.

Aha! That's what those things are. I received my 78F with just a big bag of parts and bolts all jumbled together and I could not find where those went. ....and as mentioned they are not on the parts fiche. Of course I only have 5 of them. I was just about to take the first ride on the bike since assembly, so I had better put them where they go. Do the pictures provided show the correct orientation on the bracket?

Pictures basically do.

If you wanna see the parts breakdown try the 79 CBX or the 78 GL1000. Same part

These little chrome 'retainers' stop the steel backplate of the pad chewing up the ally caliper body and allow the pad to move more easily.
But beware as corrosion builds up behind this 'retainer' and stops the pads from moving.
I always file down the leading and trailing edge of the pads and put a smear of copaslip on these edges, as well as on the steel back plate of the pad.
A smear of copaslip does well behind the 'retainer' as well.

Silverback. I think we only need four retainers! And yes thats where they sat on the calipers. I just pulled it forward to snap the pics.

Cool! Thanks! I was looking at the parts fiche for the GL1000 and they also use them on the rear caliper. That's why I was thinking that 5 is not enough to do all 3 calipers (2 per caliper).
