Obsolete and out of date parts
« on: December 24, 2005, 08:41:46 AM »
You guys are probably way ahead of me on this but here's something to ask your favorite parts person. Do they have any obsolete, out of date or non returnable sohc4 parts? My dealer has a small room dedicated to these for all ood parts. I found a bunch of small stuff and some treasures for my next projects and bought them at a reduced price. Fortunately(?) I've spent many $$$'s there so he turned me loose to go through the stock myself without a full cavity search after. Many were not on proper bags and not in inventory any more so not saleable at full retail.
Happy shopping and Merry Christmas!

Hey good point.  Theres been a couple times where Ive bought parts from a local shop, and the guy comes outa the parts room with a bewildered look on his face saying,"I'm surprised this was actually in stock."  And both times the part was original Honda, complete with faded label in both English and Japanese.  I wonder what treasures await us?

Sometimes it's better to check with the parts guys before buying "obsolete" parts on e-bay too. Case in point, Honda is manufacturing HM300 and HM341 exhaust pipes (just bought  a number 3) and seats too.  They aren't cheap but they are new. One item on e-bay was listed at about $12US plus shipping of $6US, bought two at my dealer for $8 each Canadian.

The problem with honda dealers is that a few years ago (around 2000 or so) Honda North America offered a buyback on SOHC parts to the dealers where they would get credit to current inventory if they cleaned out their old inventory room. My local honda dealer called and asked why Honda wanted the old parts, and they told him that they could centeralize the out of production parts so that each dealer had a fair crack at getting parts to the customer. What actuall happened is that honda destroyed all the old and obsolete parts that were sent in as part of the buyback. Not every dealer sent in their stuff, but still I can't imagine how many parts were destroyed - my local dealer sent them back an NOS 350F tank. Not every old dealer will have old stock lying around and this is probably one of the reasons.

It may be fun just to stop into Honda shops on the way if you're travelling and ask if they still have anything "old" around. Never know what might pop up!
Cheers, Cliff.
