Steering lock key
« on: December 23, 2005, 05:06:57 PM »
Bought a cherry complete front end for my 550 project ($50 is cheaper than trying to rebuild frozen forks!). Since the bike has all original matching locks and original keys,  want to transfer the steering lock. No problem removing from old front end, but need t1564 key to remove from new steering head. Will pay postage if I can borrow a key, and you can have the lock.

Unless you're interested in saving the new lock (T1564) for future use, you really don"t need a key to remove it.  Simply drill the pins out, turn the cylinder with a flat scewdriver while pulling toward you and it's out - destroyed, but out.

Drill directly above the key slot.  The objective is to cut through the small pins, thereby allowing the cylinder to spin freely.

Any locksmith can open the lock for you, and many can rekey it for you to fit your ignition key. For that matter, it is a very easy lock to pick yourself. A small screwdriver to torque the cylinder and a .050 ball end allen key for your pin rake will get it turning within a minute or two.
