California Registration Questions!

Hi,
I recently bought a 350F which has a title.

According to this DMV paper that previous owner gave me, it looks like the last year the bike was registered was 1998 as a non-operating condition.

Today, I went to DMV to transfer the bike under my name as non-op, but this lady told me that I can't put it in non-op because I'm a new owner and it's been too long since the last time the bike has been registered.

She also said that I have to wait for a year to register as a non-op.

I didn't really know how this system works, so I just had to pay whatever she told me to pay.

So I paid 84 dollars of tax, transfer fee, and a sticker.



Is this how CA system works? or should I go to DMV again to complain?


PS. I told her the bike was gift even though it wasn't. Is this the reason why the price is so high?

That's pretty much the way it is. I just transfered ownership and registered an 85 Yamaha Vmax. It cost me $124 and I was happy. It hadn't been registered since 2001 and they could have tacked on a ton of back fees. In your case you could have been required to get a VIN verification, sometimes a major hassle. Be happy and admire your shiny yellow 2010 tag.  BTW I got to keep the blue and yellow license plate, usually you have to turn in the old style plate and they issue your vintage bike a new plate, lucky me.  Jay

gift tax can be a huge amount of money... uness you got it from a family member, then its tax free... i almost always put that i bought it for $50-$100 and scam them on the taxes. i wouldnt do that for a brand new range rover but most of the time they dont ask questions. hell i bought a 68 chevelle for $100 (actually $6000) and only paid $75 for transfer title and tax... same with my sohc..paid "$50", cost $60 to reg and that was with peneltys for waiting a year to handle the paperwork... just a thought...

So they made you reg it as operational?
Is it running?

$84 is getting off pretty easy. As Jbird said, they could have jacked you for a TON of back fees. I think the annual reg for my 73 is like $43 IIRC so your $84 isn't even 2 years worth.

So why did they make you give up the blue plate? I thought the plate stays w/ the vehicle in CA. I still have my blue plate & I'm the 3rd owner.

I just transfered a 77 550 to my name that was on non-op. They let me keep it non-op but i still payed $58 in fees so its not a big deal that they made you register it.

I never thought about back registrations.  I was bent out of shape I had to pay a $50 penalty down here in Florida when I registered mine because I waited more than a month after I got the paperwork from ITS Titles.  I was like "the bike was mostly in boxes and had no wheels, how could I have brought it here?" but they didn't want to hear from me.  Cost me about $150 total for everything...

Ha Ha... I had to pay 400 in back fees on the 78 I just got rid of... the bike would have been out of the system in 6 months!
