I hear ya man.. I am the same way.. Also work has been kicking me... Now that its getting dark so soon after I get home I have not been on either bike for very long.. Sigh..

Yea, kinda.. I have been working weekends as well. We have a lot of upgrades going on.. Happens about ever 5 years.. Bah..

Labor day weekend is coming up, I will have the entire weekend off!!!

So, the kid comes back over today. (Surprise!) Gave a logical explanation as to what happened (his Rebel didn't sell, and some unexpected bills popped up) and I told him the bike was still here. He promised to come by within the next two weeks with a deposit. I won't hold my breath, but I won't rule it out, either.
Either way, I'll win!

Yea, they are great bikes when you want some thing light to go thru town on or just to get from point A to point B and enjoy the ride..

Mine stays, much to the dismay of my wife. She was hoping to have me get rid of one of them.

Naw, its not you. Its my brother. He go me started and because he works for Honda Motorcycles he gets great deals and rides some cool bikes. I just wish I could have gotten the VT750 he gave me running. I should never left it with my friend, he meant well however he had no idea what he did until it was too late and the motor was frozen and many of the parts (gas tank, side covers etc..) were missing. Sigh.. Still I see some around from time to time so I maybe able to pick one up some day.

Yes sad but true. However it started with a SL175 then a CB750 then a VT750 Shadow then a CB550 and now GS1000.. There were a few in between that I borrowed.

Electrical wires crusty and old
Leaking oil at head, tightening did not solve issue, needs new gasket
New clutch disc's and maybe springs
Valve adjustment

GS1000:
Carbs rebuild
Paint
Clean up
Tune up (electronic ignition so should be pretty easy)
Carb sync
Clean up wiring
New exhaust
Rear tire leak
Rebuild brakes
Stuff I have not come accross yet.

All by next spring..lol yikes!

Meh...don't be sorry! This is the way it's supposed to work! Once I've cleared it out, I will keep my eyes peeled for another SOHC, preferably a 500 or 550....I've come to love the little things!

Just about the time I think I would like a bigger CC bike I come across a sporster 883 and a rider that thinks he can take me with no problem cause he has a new big harley. Then I kick his ass and beat him to the next light and keep doing it. The look on their face is priceless!

Hope you get one by next summer!!! Making progress on the GS1000 I have 2 of the 4 carbs cleaned and the other two waiting. I should be done with it by spring for sure.

I guess I will be starting a new thread soon. I'm working hard to get this thing finished for the kid, though I haven't seen hide nor hair since the down payment.
I'm hard at work "designing" a CB550 cafe project, which once on paper, I will be actively looking for another CB500/550 as a "donor" bike.
I've come to believe the little CB is the perfect platform for a cafe. I couldn't bear to chop up my current project, as it is too nice, but there are a lot of derelicts out there ripe for the picking!

You bet there is. For every shiny CB500/CB550 there are at least 2 that are perfect Cafe candidates. I am keeping both my bikes. The CB550 is great for around town and when I just want to get out and get on it. The GS1000 is a great cruiser, heavy with a nice soft ride. Much as my wife would probably like me to sell one of them, I am not going to. I bet you hear from the kid soon, he is probably working hard to get the cash. Times are tough and its probably taking longer then he thought. I don't think he would throw away money on a down payment that he had not plan to follow thru with. I could be wrong..

Have you tried looking for a key on eBay? I typed in my code and got one for 2 bucks. There are Also some sellers that don't list the code- they just have a photograph of a list of codes that they carry.

Fast Forward/ Epilogue
I hate to leave people hanging, so....
The kid never came back. I kept his deposit and put it towards finishing the project. Then this past May, a buddy was inquiring about bikes. I had him come over and take a look-see, and though the project wasn't finished, he agreed to my asking price and put up the money to finish it like he wanted it done....which I did, except for paint. I got it running, and even rode it a bit before I handed it off. He's put on over 1500 miles since he got it without a hint of trouble! Was it a cool project? Totally! Would I buy another 500/550 SOHC? In a heartbeat. Thanks for all the help & inspiration while I brought another dead one back to life!
