Starter not disengaging??
« on: December 17, 2005, 03:41:48 PM »
How do you tell if the starter is disengaged? I think mine might be stucked. When it is idiling it sounds like it is still running.  I noticed a couple of times that it acted liked it kicked out when trying to start. When I took my finger off the button it started to run after it had kicked out. Like maybe it rengaged just before stoping. It sounds like it is engaged even when I kick start it.  Is it supposed to do that? I don't think any of my other 750's did that. It's been so long I really can't remember for sure.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say it is a 1973 moto.r

Thanks, Ron

i would disconnect it (the starter) from the power supply and give the old motor a kick... let it run... and get back to us.

Maybe the starter button has gone funky on you. Maybe a good cleaning of contacts, etc. Just a thought.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

OK diconected the power to starter still same thing. I think the gears are staying locked in. No chain ... sounds like a chain though.

was gonna say the cam chain could make a similar sound to a starter... how familiar are you with the sounds that your bike makes?  perhaps you should try to adjust the cam chain... these bikes are notorious for cam chain noise

The way the starter clutch works it's unlikely to stay "grabbed". If it did you would have a huge drag on the engine and if you revved it the starter motor would maybe come apart, it isn't made to turn super fast!
The starter clutch can make a fair bit of noise if it's failing, generally the starter motor spins with a grinding sound but no engine rotation soon after any problem is noticed though.

OK I finally got all the wiring sorted out from the fire.

Cleaned the carbs and got it running again. Hey I got to tell the forum thanks about the SEAFOAM. Man that is great stuff. It now actually idels without shutting off and back fireing like crazy. The slow jets are working a whole lot better now. I use to have to keep it between 2000 and 3000 to keep it from shuting off.

Well the noisy it makes goes aways when I pull in on the clutch and comes back when I let it out again. I can hear it up until about 1800 when the noise from every thing else drowns it out. I am thinking that it must be something with the clutch.  I am pretty sure it has a new clutch in it as all the adjustments are at the beginning.

I should say also that the noise is coming from the left side not where the clutch is??

Any ideas? Is this normal?

Thanks, Ron

I got a friend to pull in the clutch and release it a couple of times.  The sound acts like it could be coming from either side. I am guessing that is because sound travels so well in al.

So I am guessing here... maybe it does have something to do with the clutch.  Does anybody else have a chatering clutch?? Are they suppose to make such a racket. ??

Thanks, Ron

YEA, I am thinking that it is in the clutch. I was just hoping to ride it for a little while before I took it apart.

Oh well, that's the way of things I guess.

Thanks, Ron
