Topic: one more possibly dumb pinstriping question

I should've mentioned this in my last post, but:

Just got my CB750K tank back, and the painter did a black inset (similar to CB500/550 four). I'm doing white pinstripes around the perimeter, but I'd like to do the "double" style, i.e. thick white stripe, black space, then a thin stripe. I have a couple of widths of tape on order.

Anyone know any clever tricks to keep the stripes parallel when I apply them? Do just have to eyeball it and hope for the best?

Have you seen the Beugler pinstriper?

They have a dual wheel accessory that seems to do what you want.

You can use masking tape of the appropriate width in between the stripes as a spacer to keep things running paralell.  Autobody supply shops sell tape in various widths if the standard stuff at the hardware won't do what you want.

Two Tired... thanks, but the Beugler pinstriper is way beyond my humble means (about $193 beyond!), especially since I don't see myself doing this kind of thing in again soon. I watched the vids though, it looks pretty darned cool (not to mention the awesome 70's porn music).

Nikisixx probably has the right idea- I could just butt up some narrow masking tape in the middle channel. Open to anymore suggestions though.

Standard masking tape is going to leave irregular edges.  3M makes some striping tape good for the task, and will leave crisp edges.

Are you going to clear coat over it?
If so, RC hobby shops sell striping in various widths and colors.  Example:

Otherwise a pinstriping brush is not that expensive.  About $12 if you shop around.  And, you get to learn a new skill!

I used this on my friends 74 BMW Whale tank, it came out VERY nice.
Painted right on. Tape+ Paint shipped was $20, I used a Testors model brush.
The paint self leveled very nicely.

Sorry I wasn't clear... I intend to just use pinstriping tape. I'm far from being a pro painter and the tank's already been professionally painted and clearcoated, so I'm pretty queasy about the idea of applying anything on top of that. This is what it looks like now...

Thanks! It's attaches to a pretty nice bike too The side covers and headlight bucket are candy gold as well, and I already stripped/repainted/attached the 750 four badges. Just got the HONDA tank badges today and need to refinish/attach them. Will post pics when it's done.

Might consider stopping by a local automotive paint supplier. Scotch (if I recall correctly) offers  rolls of "pinstripe tape". in essence, a muliple layer tape... where  2-3-4  colored bands are affixed symetrically with a common base and top sheath. As a relative spaz. (just inept, not challenged) i've done  3 or 4 jobs where results were acceptable. and after clear coating w/current polymers are (to my eye)  are indecernible to stock paint schemes which used decals. and so far fuel resistant.  To be fair, I'm just a Hack, I Have a TR6C which I had a Pro paint in "traditional" scalops w/liniated pistripes. which have no steps and are so sharp they cut. and have no desire to compare. still, for a rider, dual colors/pinstriping  w/emblems /stock colors all, offer much more than simpy fogging bits.luck G
