The "Oh my God" mantras
« on: December 14, 2009, 05:08:47 PM »
OK so we've all been there, leaned too far into a corner and come out on the wrong side of the road or blasted down an open road just to be hit with a nasty cross wind. (did I mention I hate wind?) :o
So what's your private mantra, the one you say in your head as the rest of your physical body fights to keep the bike shiny side up?
One I thought might be good is "If I survive this I'll never ever ever do that again! ;D
But the one I do use is "Knees in elbows down".  :)
Not sure why but it comes from rider training many many moons ago and whenever I go in too deep or come out too hot on a corner or suddenly get buffetted by a damn cross wind at speed that's what is going on inside my helmet...."knees in elbows down". :D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Not that's just sheer panic or possibly what you say as the tow truck picks your bike up like a dead chicken. :D

I put it on the "Shakes" scale.  #1 shakes = That was stupid, #5 shakes = I think I need new underware, #10 shakes = I think I need a new hobby.  I have only ever reached #9. ;D

The cursing ususally starts after the incident. For some unknown reason I say. "This is not gonna end well." Have no idea where I got it.

Before I got old it was "this is going to hurt" after I got old, it's happened and then I say "what happened" and then try to analyze the event.

i def have one that comes to mind

couple years ago got swept out to sea in n Carolina. wound up mile or so offshore and had to swim to next island over. im a advanced open water diver/surfer and very confident in the ocean but gd! i was scared #$%*less. would up thinking about diving into the deep and inhaling water becuase i didnt want to gargle drown. it actuall got to that point... houses were tiny on the horizon.

so i said id swim till i couldnt anymore. thought i was a goner so i did what has never let me down. prayed.

kinda did a mantra thing...

"lord keep me calm,
keep me strong,
keep me calm,
keep me strong,
and so on...

every stroke i said one of those and just repeated. close to 2 hours

needless to say i made it back.
thx for listen'n

showin dude how to surf (as much as u can in carolina) and i had the smart idea to go out to the break hitting the current of a river pouring out to sea. woulda been fine had we both had boards but i went out just swimming. current pushed 1 mi or so out to sea. then hit next island down. current going e to w. i figured i must have been a total of i dunno 3 or so miles.

i can swim 2+ if my life depended on it but take into currents, fear, sun, having eaten nothing that day, and the rest i feel really damn lucky  :o

middle of holden beach to ocean island at hightide i guess it must have been. the pic shows a straight shot blue line is 2.4 mi. i bulged out to where the river current died down a bit i guess. had to swim in ne direction the intire time.

keep me strong
keep me calm...

at least now i know the best survival stroke!!!
alternating sissor kick with i guess you call it the intermediarry stroke with ur arms on your back.

i'll probably never ever forget the ride in the ambulance and laying on a table in the ER this day i broke my neck, saying over and over "this cant be happening, this cant be happening, this cant be happening" i'd just been promoted at the resturant i was a chef at that morning, i left for my daily work and ride at the barn, then within 5 minutes of getting on the horse i was laying in the dirst saying it "this cant be happening"  :D

funny what i can laugh at now isnt it?

Yeah, if you get sucked into a rip current swim perpendicular to it until you get away from it, them swim in. The survival stroke can save your ass.

I got caught in one too when I was about 12 in Florida and it scared the bejeezus out of me but I remembered what to do from my swim classes.
