Well, I have the original mounting setup and can run with that until you have them done.

Cool -- thanks for the patience.  I don't want to prolong it, though.  I'll start getting the wheels moving today.  Hopefully I can give you a timeframe estimate shortly.

You should make a few, and use them as "barter" for hard to find parts you need for your bike.

I'm thinking I'll do a run of 10 or so and see how it goes. I think it's a big improvement, while letting you keep your original gauges and making no irrereversible changes.

I'll make some general postings in the classifieds section, once they're done.

For those that voiced an interest, I'll send a message to you directly when they're ready (or close to ready).

Gonna have to do the engine bolt kit, it looks like! ;D

~Joe

did you just get some stainless steel allen bolts or is there a kit as joe here suggests that you can buy?

There are kits on eBay for $10 US Dollars.  60 piece set.  They say they are for CB550/750.  Stainless Allen head bolts.

~Joe

Has anyone used the Cycle-Recycle bolt kit?  I'm going to go the socket-head cap-screw route too and was wondering if their kit is good.

I'm looking at your fork seals in the photo below.  I'm toying with the idea of removing my fork boots and original headlight mounts and going with something like what you've got.  This might be a stupid question, but where can I get those fork seals like what you have, to replace the fork boots I currently have?  Also, I really like the headlight mounting brackets... where can I get those too?  Thanks in advance.

It's funny you ask.  During the build, I've actually developed and kept up a spreadsheet documenting all my parts and sources.  Of course, it goes deeper than that, comparing prices of the same part through multiple vendors, etc.  But, I digress  ;D

I got the fork dust boots from Partsnmore.  They're way cheaper than the OEM Honda boots.  You can find them here:
https://www.partsnmore.com/cat_index.php?model=cb750_sohc&category=chassis
If you scroll down approximately half-way, you should see them.  They have two different ones listed.  The ones that fit my bike are the second ones (part #27-1080).  For $18/pr you can't beat 'em.

The headlight brackets I got from a vendor on eBay.  They have a regular online store, too, but their eBay prices are better sometimes.  These are the ones:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/headlight-brackets-bracket-cb750-cb900-cb1100-gl1000_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem27ac2a6026QQitemZ170392182822QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Your bike looks great, btw.  I checked out your pics and thread.  I'm envious that you can ride yours.  Mine just sits in my garage, waiting to be finished  :'(

Wow!  Thank you very much, not only for the very detailed reply, but also for the complement.   :)

I'm still up in the air a bit about whether to replace the gaiters with the fork dust boots.  I like the look of the gaiters and original headlight mount, but I kind of want to remove them because I suspect they trap moisture and slowly ruin the forks by corrosion.

Have you thought about getting lighter aluminum alloy rims?  I'm in the market for them myself and was wondering what kind other folks are using.  They're an easy way to decrease weight.

I agree with you about the gaiters.  Taking mine off and seeing how much corrosion was present, especially given my humid gulf-coast climate, really drove that point home for me.

I haven't looked into aluminum rims.  In the scurry to get things more complete, I decided to just thoroughly clean and reassemble the wheels.  So, they'll have to wait for another day.  Good idea, though.  I just haven't looked into it, yet.

More bike updates coming shortly.

On an aside, the gauge mounting bracket plates should be back from the waterjet today.  I should have units ready shortly.  If you've already messaged me about them, I'll be contacting you.

I had them run in two materials:
     - mild steel, which will be painted low-gloss black, as pictured in my build thread (custom colors possible, for upcharge to cover the cost of new paint)
     - stainless steel, which can be painted, polished, whatever.  If you want it polished before you get it, the price will reflect the extra work.

Both materials utilize a bored aluminum spacer to achieve the necessary offset (just as pictured in the build thread), which gets attached to the plate via metal epoxy.  They can ship as sepate, too, if you prefer.  I only attach them together for convenience when painting.  Once they are bolted to the bike, they act as one piece, anyway.

These will also ship with new stainless steel hardware:  stainless flat washers, stailess nylon locking nuts and your choice of stainless allen or stainless hex head bolts.

Thanks!  The frame came out about two shades lighter than it was supposed to, but it's started to grow on me.  In the photos, it's hard for it to not look white, even though it's really light gray.

Have you put together a price for these brackets?

Mayor -- you are on my contact list for the brackets, good to hear from you.

My pricing didn't turn out bad at all, so here's where I ended up:

$30 for mild steel, primered and shot low-gloss black (as pictured in my build thred).
$38 for stainless steel (raw or painted low-gloss black, as above).
$45 for polished or brushed-finish stainless steel.

As mentioned before, all units utilize a bored aluminum spacer to achieve the necessary offset (just as pictured in the build thread), which gets attached to the plate via metal epoxy.  They can ship as separate, too, if you prefer.  I only attach them together for convenience when painting and installing.  Once they are bolted to the bike, they act as one piece, anyway.

All units will be supplied with new stainless steel hardware for attaching the bracket to your top triple clamp, to include: stainless flat washers (top and bottom), stainless nylon locking nuts and your choice of stainless cap head allen bolts or stainless hex head bolts.

All prices include thorough packaging and shipping to anywhere in the U.S.

These should be ready shorltly.  I have a list of people who have already contacted me -- I will contact you about your possible purchase first thing when they're ready.

Anyone else interested is free to contact me, as well, either by forum message or email:  modern.built@gmail.com

Once I talk to all those interested, the rest of the units (if any) will be available for general consumption, hopefully at the same cost.

The production units will be much more precise, since they're waterjet cut.  The unit pictured was cut by me, using an angle glinder and air cut-off tool.

Some photos of my hand-cut bracket:

Cheers!   ;D

So what's the plan for the seat and cowl?

I won't have a cowl.  I've made a slim electronics box that nestles between the top frame tubes, under the seat.  My AGM battery and all electronics will live there.

The seat will be a fairly simple, 2-up affair.  But with a catch.  It's baseball glove brown.  It'll likely have white stitching in a diamond quilted pattern (turned 45 degrees to the seat/bike).  I practiced stitching this over the weekend, but I'm no seamstress/upholsterer.  I may have to sub this one out.

Thank you, my friend.  That's what I'm going for.

What color is that tank?  Looks good

Believe it or not, I rattlecan painted the tank with Duplicolor's Pewter automotive paint, using this process as my go-by:
http://dotheton.com/index.php?topic=10993.0

I still have my final wetsand, buff and wax to do, but I'm finally done with the painting portion.  And that's no small feat!  The priming and painting alone took me more than a week.  And that was after the week or more I spent on smoothing the tank.  Whew!   :P

Lookin' good, I like how detailed your thread is!!

I'm gonna watch this one.

Thanks!  I got so much inspiration and information about process from others' build threads, so I'm just hoping to keep up!

I suppose it could fall into that style; although, I wasn't intentionally making it fit the brat aesthetic.  I'm just trying to do what the bike wants  ;D

I was definitely inspired by the way these seats look, so I can definitely see you point!

Update on the brackets --

The waterjet cutting took longer than expected, but, with some luck, I should have some brackets ready for sale by Monday.  I'll post some photos at that point and contact the folks on my list.

Thanks for the patience, guys!

well, I like it. It lets you keep your custom bike usable for two up. Most custom builds don't so think its cool just for that reason. Keep up the good work.

I heart your bike!! I'm in the process as well but its nowhere near as clean as yours. I think you just made me step up my game. Keep up the good work!!

Thank you!  I'm flattered that your first forum post was about my bike.  Geez, now I'm motivated to work even harder on it  ;D
