TEC or ND POINTS source

Looking to get a set of TEC (toyo electric company) or ND (nippon denso) points for my 74 550.

I had a set of diachi and the rub block broke off last summer stranding me 200 miles from home.

My local dealer cannot order them. Does anyone have a source for online purchase?

Good read on the quality of points. I have found on Ebay you can get Gen Honda complete points plates for not much more than just points and condensers and way easier. The backplates are thicker and the set and stay way easier. Gen Honda only had the good points. Dan

I don't want to start an argument, but have you thought about installing an electronic ignition?  I put a Dyna S ignition module in my 1975 550K a couple of years ago.  It starts better, runs stronger and seems to get better gas mileage, although the gas milage may be due to several other upgrades I made.  I kept the OEM coils.  It is an easy install.

I thought about the dyna, but as of now I would rather have points. I don't mind adjusting them, and if one goes bad I can swap in a new one and keep on driving.

If I do decide to go with a dyna, wouldn't I have to swap in 3 Ohm coils?

The dyna is designed to be run with 3 ohm or higher.

Personally, I like points.  Easy to understand and swap out in case of failure.  I can fix them with a screw driver and a matchbook. 

Shizz, Do a search for "Hondaman Ignition module" which is a good addition to a points system.  It's basically a solid state relay that uses your points as the trigger.  The relay handles the bulk of the coil current.  The advantage is that your points see very little current thus very little arcing thus very little degradation of the points faces.  With quality points and a little lube on the cam follower every few thousand miles, chances are your grand kid will be the next person to change out the points!

I got a set of TEC on ebay from someone called dream305. I thank that is the only kind he has. I also have one of Hondamans Ignitions modules on a 79 Goldwing that I like very much.

yeah I am planning on getting one for the spring... I have heard good things from everyone who has one. Plus the warranty is unbeatable!

+1.........I even installed it in my old k'saki twin. I now get smoother running and 7-10% better mpg than previously attainable. :)

I believe the original coils are 5 ohm, but I could be wrong.  They work fine with the Dyna.

I can remember the early 1970's when cars went from points to electronic ignition.  The old timers were worried about being "stranded" with technology they couldn't fix on the side of the road.  Fact is the new technology was and is way better (stronger spark, no point float etc.) and far more reliable.  The Dyna makes your bike feel like new.  It really is remarkable the improvements it provides.  I was surprised when I did mine a few years back.

The Hondaman ignition module is a good alternative.

That's odd.. I was able to get points from my local Honda dealer. They keep them in stock even!

I had a Dyna-S on my 750, but after 3 years it started to act up when it got hot, causing one set of cylinders to randomly miss. I went back to points and no more problems. If your coils are in good shape, all battery and coil connections are clean and tight with minimal voltage drop and you take your time setting up the points properly, you should have an excellent-running bike. I am seriously looking at going to a HondaMan ignition, as it gives the best of both worlds.

Yeah the local dealer stocks points, but not the OEM points that I want. I got a set of diachi last year and the rub block broke off one of them and I had to leave the bike.

I don't want this to happen again

My dealer stocks the OE Honda ones.

I see you are in Michigan, as am I. Where are you located?

If worse comes to worse, you can probably find them at Western Hills Honda. That way you can get them faster if you do end up having to order them.

If you run with points, spend the extra money and get the Hondaman ignition to go with it.
