I know it was an Encore showing of a previous Barrett Jackson Auction on the Speed channel just now, but They had a Plymouth Super Bird that was built out of a 1970 Plymouth Satellite for The Darrel Gwynne (not sure of spelling) Foundation (which supplies Kids with wheelchairs, who can not get them otherwise. This car was a project of Ray Everham's bunch, Year One AND Richard Petty (& maybe others) and this car brought $501,000 and that's not counting tremendous contributions that were also collected. I was just floored that folks could kick in THAT kind of money for such a Great cause. :'(

For those who don't know, Darell was an uprising young AA fuel Drag racer who was really making people pay attention, because he was winning the races big time! Then, while he was in England (I think), he was in a terrible crash at a drag strip over there and was very lucky to survive it. He never was able to race again. But, He kept on going and doing things. HE deserves a lot of credit for all the good he is doing. It was just so incredible to see people responding to a fantastic need. ;)

Thats awesome. Daryl continued as a team owner for a while. Richard Petty and family have done a world of good also.

Yeah, I remember Daryl did that, but I had forgotten til you mentioned it. He was quite an inspiration THEN, but now, is even more so! Yeah The Petty family has done loads also. It IS something to know that SOME folks, who are able to, are trying to make a difference. 8)

me and a few of friend were going to the drags that weekend but didn't work out for some reason.
I was stationed at Upper HeyFord in England for 3 years 89-91. Drag racing was just getting popular and we all went to support them. I have some very nice pic/slides of some vintage days.

It was at Avon Park I do believe. in 90 sometime it has been awhile.

That was a sad day. He was as good racer.
It think his frame came apart.

I think you are right, I think it WAS something with the frame. Darrell was a VERY talented driver too!  Bet those pictures you have, are something. ;)

On another note, I was watching some Drag Racing on tv with my Dad one Saturday (or Sunday) and Don Prudhome (spelling?), "The Snake" was racing against a fellow (can't remember who) and the other guy's clutch (or flywheel) exploded, cutting the car in 2 right behind the engine. Don was rattled to say the least and swore off of Drag Racing, right there on national tv (of course he did keep on racing though. Rear engine AA Fueler's really started coming out then.

Our family likes to exchange donations for charities over the holidays.
Many of us can't break free from the toy joy on Christmas morning though.   ;D
I always wonder what it would be like to spread a huge wealth all over the world.  Or say, to each of the SOHC4 brethren.
If I win the lottery tomorrow, I'll give you all a piece.   ;D ;)

Ok, so 501k is 10-15 salaries?  Maybe less, maybe more?  That is a lot of wheelchairs!

That's a cool idea for the holidays! Yeah, the toy joy IS exciting isn't it?

I'm with you, I'd give, if I won the lottery. Only thing is, I don't participate, so I'll never win it. Sorry folks, might have worked, if I did. :-\ It WOULD be a Fantastic feeling to be able to Do that though.

Yep, lots of wheel chairs. Not as many as you might think though, with powered wheelchairs. I used to work with a "Special; Needs" young man, with a wheelchair (about $5K) and then, his Mom worked things around and got him a "powered chair" like from a place called "The Scooter Store" (advertised on TV) and he didn't even WANT a Powered chair of ANY kind! Anyway, that chair costs about $10K. An actual "powered" WHEEL CHAIR would have been more (because of all the special features and adjustments for the individual)!
