Ones I have seen-used are like big copper crush washers.

Egor, OE exhaust gaskets were/are a a composite, an outer sheath of copper, surrounding a (probly) asbestoes core. after market gaskets come in a variety of layered fibre materials  sometimes wire wrapped, others a pressed steel weave semi-surrounded w/copper. I prefer stock, but have run misc others without probs, G

Assumed they would be made out of asbestos or some type of other material.  The copper shell threw me.  Thought they were solid copper.

All my OEM exhaust gaskets have been copper tube only.  The CB550 and GL1100 take the same gasket.  And lord knows I have changed a lot of them.  I have gone through three sets over the rebuild of the GL1100 in one year, and I have to remove the exhaust from the CB550 every time I change the oil, about 3 times a year.
