i got an integrated stereo amplifier and a turntable. the amp is an Onkyo TX-811 and a Technics SL-D2 turntable.......................traded them for 5 sets of strings for a classical (nylon strings) guitar. does anyone here know much about the Onkyo products? any good? it sounds alot nicer than my 15 year old Sony reciever thats for sure. it can really push my ancient, gigantic Yamaha tower speakers. i've been wanting a turntable again for the past 20 years or so as i have a bunch of old vinyl, alot of old jazz and blues like Billie Holday, Howling Wolf, several original Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Dave Brubeck that my mom got new back in the 50's and 60's. all the turntable needs is a new catridge. once again, Craigslist has found me a kickass deal. since i absolutely hate playing a nylon string guitar this was more like some free stereo equipment.

Edit : this model turntable is selling for as much as 175 bucks! i pretty much stole this stuff.

Onkyo is decent japanese stuff, about the same build quality as Sony.
The Technics is a decent table, I'm just not a big fan of direct drive unless I am DJing though.

That website is nice Buck, found some more info on My Rega table.  :)

I don't remember the model number of my 2 turntables but they are similar to yours, buttons and dials are just in different places.
Once I got new Stanton cartridges they sound and work great.
Good trade, I'd say!

all i need to get is a new needle since the moving magnet cartridge is less than a year old. i have a complete stereo in the house now, with the new reciever, turntable, a teac reel to reel and a 15 year old sony cd player with a 25 year old Pioneer graphic equalizer that must weigh 25 pounds LOL. all this playing through some old, gigantic Yamaha tower speakers will likely be able to make my neighbors wet their beds if i crank it up  ;D

The old stuff is the best stuff.  I have 2 old Pioneer receivers, Technics SL-Q6 linear tracking turntable, Technics 5 Disc CD turntable playing through 25+ year old rebuilt Marantz speakers.  I love being able to feel the bass.

I used to sell this stuff on ebay. You did very well. They are good units.

the last thing i'll need for the house stereo now is a pair of first or second generation Bose 601's

Cool deal Jeff. 8) I drug out my old Akai 1800 Reel to Reel w/ eight track Player/ recorder a couple of weeks ago. It had been sitting on the shelf in my closet for several years. I really expected the belts to come apart, when I plugged an eight track cartridge in and turned it on. Sill works pretty well. Lots of static though. I'll get me some of that spray and clean out the volume controls. Got a smallish Pioneer Tuner/Amp that was part of my setup while I was in Japan i the late 60's. and a pair of Marrantz (spelling) speakers. Also, had (and still have) a Garrard turntable as part of the setup. Only thing missing is the reverberator that I had too. Everything seems to work pretty good though. Good luck with YOUR stuff. 8) ;)

Bill, open up the cover and put a drop of oil on the motor shaft. Get a Q Tip and wipe off the heads with rubbing alcohol. The biggest failure on 8 Track units is motors seizing and the drive belt breaking. I brought many back to life.

I appreciate that Bobby. I DID put a new set of belts on it but that was back in the 80's. ::) I was going to see about selling my stuff back a few years ago and Brenda told me to keep it because of it's value to me AND she didn't WANT me to get rid of it either. She was something, she would have let someone take the bike stuff away, but not that old stereo equipment. ::) ;) I need to find me some speaker connectors for my Pioneer SX440 tuner/amp. I can't seem to locate mine yet. the were small rectangular shaped plastic plugs with 2 blades (the top blade was horizontal and the lower one was vertical. No pictures though. They are probably here somewhere, I just need to try to dig them up.

Take care Bobby and thanks again for the input, Bill ;)

Buh, not really. 70's solid state was kind of #$%* actually. If you want the good stuff you'll have to get 60's and 70's tube equipment or get later 80's solid with decent build quality.

I would disagree, the cheap early Solid State stuff was too bright, or they muddied it up to make it sound like tube. The high end Yamaha, Fisher, Marantz is extremely good and superior to much of you modern gear.
The difference is that the older good quality units had transformers not solid state powers supplies. The transformers  pushed the base and midrange. Today it is all about power and they make up the lack of range with subwoofers and delays. I do use a subwoofer on my Vintage gear and it makes it even better since I use an equalizer to enhance the higher ranges and maintain the bass.

C'mon Bobby, you're gonna defend early Marantz and McIntosh solid state gear?

There is a reason I see it for sale all the time at shops...

They are probably as good as the average person can hear. Since I sold the stuff in HS and College I realized the average guy has average ears. I have one tube unit I have never parted with and never will. My KLH Mod 8. McIntosh is the Harley of the Audio World.

But their tube equipment sounds pretty damn sweet, and when their solid state got good (even though it is hella expen$$$ive) it sounds pretty sweet also.

You're gonna compare them to Harley? That's a little rough Bobby.  ;)

No I have two MC30 monoblocs and they are great and more reliable than a Harley. Some people buy McIntosh tube gear since they like the sound, others because like some Harley buyers they have to have snob appeal. My daily listening is a Denon component system.

I like McIntosh snobs. I bought a complete Tuner, Preamp and Amplifier tube system for $50 at an Estate sale and sold it for around $2,000. I really like McIntosh snobs.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

well, it all sounds pretty damn good. the wife picked up an auditechnica moving magnet catridge for me while she was out today. i still want to get a pair of old Bose 601's whether i but em for cash or trade for parts. those 601's were the #$%* back in the early 80's when i got my first "real" stereo equipment, an HH Scott reciever, Denon turntable, Teac cassette deck and a Teac reel to reel.

I had a pair of those 601's.
They're ok, but the woofers died from age and wear.
I replaced them w/ the wrong size.   :-\
I hope to get them back from my father at some point and rebuild them correctly.

Buck, spend your money elsewhere for speakers- Bose speakers are OK at best, they just threw a bunch of money into adverti$$$ing. You could do way better with a set of Energy or Epos speakers.
A set of old Advent or AR's would be better if you want old vintage instead of Bose.

i have a pair of 10 year old Yamaha speakers on it now. i would REALLY like to have a pair (or 2) of 70's tower speakers with gigantic woofers,  horn tweeters, and enough volume to make the people the next street down from me wet their beds.

my Dad had a 120 watt/per channel amp it was a Lafayette. I should break it out one of these days.
I own a SU-V6X. like this http://www.vintage-audio.com.ua/en/cat/370/1949.html
and a tuner like this. http://www.stereomanuals.com/vintagetechnics/tuners/stg7.htm
now run a NAD 2200 and 1155 pre amp with monster cable reference 2's.
http://www.wired4sound.net.au/systems/nad/nad.htm
I'm having the cold solder cut out these had (2200) and need to take to work to solder it up.
I made some speakers like some Klipsch. 12" woofer with a set of horns. 3/4" birch.
I have put them through the test and never blown a speaker.
