cb750 output shaft oil seal - any tricks to install?
« on: January 03, 2006, 06:51:57 PM »
I have just ordered an output shaft oil seal (countershaft) from honda for my cb750k2

Looking at how the pieces of the output shaft are put together it seems that all I have to do is remove the front sprocket then slide the old seal off the shaft and slip the new one on in its place, right?

Are there any tricks to doing this that will ensure that it seals?

should I coat it with oil to moisten it or put it in dry?

when I attempted to replace the tach drive seal last year I apparently damaged the seal while putting it in and so it leaked just as much with the new seal as it did with the old.  When I watched my mechanic do it (with the 2nd oil seal I bought >:( ) he was so gentle and careful with it like a surgeon.  It was a good lesson for me to see that.

I would like to do this output shaft seal right the first time ;D

thanks,

Adam

There's probably a way to remove/replace the seal without splitting your cases Adam, but I've never seen it done? Good luck! Cheers, Terry ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Hey Terry.

It would really suck if I had to pull the engine just to replace a seal that seems so easily reached...

I think that is the one of the things about these bikes that I find most annoying.

This seal seems similar in design to the tach drive seal, thought much larger.

Somone please tell me I don't have to pull the engine to stop this irritating oil leak...

Thanks for sharing your experience terry.  I do appreciate it, though it may irritate me mightily why such a thing must be so :o

I've done it w/o splitting the cases.  I drove a punch into the old one and pried it out.  I coated the sealing surface of the new seal with oil, left the outer edge dry, and used a large socket to knock it in straight.  Worked great and hasn't leaked.

Well I still think it would have been a great experience for you to have pulled your engine apart mate! ;D

Great tip, how hard did you hit that seal to put a hole in it or bend it out of shape to pry it out?.

I'd be more worried about smashing the case if you mis hit..
