unruly cb650 head bolt

hello nice people, at the moment I have a head bolt with the remains of an easyout in it (I'm the one who put it there)
thoughts or sympathy will be appreciated

been there done that but with a broken bleed nipple on the front brake, end result get a replacement caliper from wrecker

much sympathy.... hope you don't have to replace the head...I do not have any suggestions to assit in the removal of stuck item either sorry..

Just another thought, if possible weld a solid steel section to the easy out and use some gentle mass leverage technique to remove it, plus a few choice words if it snaps off......proceed slowly with caution..

is there any amount of easyout protruding from the head - i reckon you would need minimum 15-20mm exposed for an attempt of this sort. but prior to attempt flood the stuck bolt with a penetrating lubricant for a few days..

has worked for me in the past with different motors, same problem.

I hate it when that happens.  If the easyout is broken down in the hole, you can use a Dremel tool with a carbide bit to grind the easyout.  Take your time and take care you don't eat through the bolt into the threads.  Try to stay centered. If you are lucky, after you get some of the easyout ground out it will loosen and come out.  Shoot some compressed air into the hole occasionally as you work on it and it will come out eventually.

Again, go slow and brace your hands because the carbide bit will probably want to grab, especially at first.  The bit will also want to walk away from the hard easyout into the softer bolt.

Another alternative is to take it to a machine shop.

  Also, even if you have to enlarge the hole slightly, you can posibly repsir threads w/ either a heli-coil or an insert. Good Luck, as it will be a slow, cautious time consuming job. May the force be with you, Bill

I'd weld a nut to the bolt head and use a 6 point socket to get it off. The heat from welding should make the bolt come out easier too.

While all of these other ideas appear to be good ones, you still have the problem of the bolt being locked in the threads. After you get you nut or whatever welded to the the mess then let it cool, warm the casing that the bolt goes into, introduce wax (candle wax) to the hot metal. This wax sneaks right between the bolt and the casing.

Wax baby wax... This is an old automotive trick that has helped me remove even the most stubborn fasteners (even the ones the rookie has mauled before I got to it)  ;D

Thanks for all the ideas.
After some sweating and swearing and threatening the motor with a very large hammer, I am going to take it to a machine shop and go trout fishing instead. :)

Pride is sometimes a curse, but anyway I decided that this bolt will not laugh in my face. A friend made me up a carbide tip drill on an extension to reach down to the offending bolt. Hours of sweat and beers have not helped. Now the MASTER PLAN, junior hacksaw and I cut through the barrel casting and through that sucker just above the crankcase.
Now the head and barrels are off it is time for a few beers and watch some rugby down my local.

A belated update, I found some aluminum sheet of the same thickness as my cut, drilled a hole in it to allow the new bolt to pass thru, tapped it into position, job done.16 years and 20,000 km later, still all good.

I have all my cylinder stud threads Time-Sert'd. In many cases Time-Sert in a Time-Sert'd. In one case Time-Sert in a Time-Sert in a Time-Sert'd. Seems the good people at the Honda Motor Company never intended these to come apart and go back together as many times as I've come to doing.
