Its cool, I believe Camelman is going to send me one. It does suck though, having everything back together and in [possibly] good running condition, but not being able to start it up.

I'm just jealous you can even work on your bike....it's 20 degrees in my garage right now. Thats when 35 year old bolts and nuts snap REAL EASY.

Current status is: waiting on the tappet cover from Camelman (should be here in a few days), waiting for a speedo cable from Honda so I can hopefully ppass inspection (I'm not 100% sure what all is involved in the inspection). The bike wasnt titled when I bought it, but in the state of Alabama vehicles over 30 years old can obtain a title with only a notorized bill of sale and an inspection (you can also get any cop to inspect it, doesnt have to be at the dmv)

so if i  dont pass inspection, I've got a cop friend who might be able to help me out. Anybod know what a roadworthiness inspection might entail? I guess at that point I should probably get a motorcycle license too  ;D

Honestly, that crimson tide "shirt" might have just cost you a tappet cover.  I'm going to hunt down the postman who is delivering your mail and put a stop order on that delivery!   ;D

Any luck?

Well I got my new tappet cover (thanks Camelman!), put it all back together, and with the new plug caps I suppose it may run better but it still doesnt run very good at all  >:( Here is a video (not the best quality). I could describe how it runs all day long, but I think this is a better option. (Could my plugs already have resistors in em... so when coupled with a resistor cap, i get a weak spark?). It feels like the bike is running rich. I haven't done timing or tappet clearances, but the points look good, no pitting or anything. I have checked (via instructions in the manual) the coils and rectifier, replaced plug caps. New fuel lines, new fuel filter. No leaks coming from the newly cleaned carbs.

Tell me what you think, hear, etc...

PS - today when I went to start the bike, the battery was on the charger and make a sort of 'boiling' noise... is this bad? My 1 amp trickle charger was set to 12v charge and left, it should shut off when 12v is reached though i think

Yes, the battery may make a bit of noise some times.  Did you pull the small red cap off the overflow tube and attach the long clear overflow tube to it?

Your bike does sound rough.  Have you done a compression test yet?  Other thoughts are:
1) not getting good spark to each cylinder
2) incorrect timing,dwell, points gap
3) bad condensers
4) bad points
5) carbs out of sync (my bike displays a very evident "death rattle" when it is out of sync)

I know you have checked all of this before, but it might not hurt to check one more time.  Was the engine taken apart since when it last ran and now?

Yes i have a battery drain tube installed.. I will finish checking timing, gaps, etc soon. As for the carbs, they are bench sync'd at the moment

Did you replace the points and condensers?  If not, then did you clean the points and test the condensers?

Ugh, sounds like she's fighting herself! Once you get the bike warmed up, move the points plate (left and right), and see if this helps......maybe advancing or retarding the spark might do the trick.

Update:

I re-set the points gaps to .35mm... I checked mostly with my eyeball when the points 'just' open to make sure it was on the F mark, because trying to use the ohm meter for this the numbers jumped around wildly with every movement of the crankshaft...

I put the points cover back on and started her up and she does run much better now, though I cant say for sure if she's running as good as she ought to as i've got nothing to compare to. I'll post a video soon of how it runs and you can tell me what you think... 2 things:

1. the choke has to be open a tad for it to stay running.. not much, but if i close it completely, the bike will die. Is this a problem?

2. it revs better than before but the idle is such that if I rev it up (it wont rev comfortably any higher than around 6k RPMs, never has) and let go of the throttle, the tach needle plummets and I guess the idle isnt strong enough to keep it alive once the revs are in a freefall like that... Is this a sign of something? how can it be remedied?

My bikes are kind of tough to start but very shortly afterwards they smooth out.  How long did you let it run in that video?

Isn't that a bit wide?  I think it's 12-16.  I was able to fashion a degree wheel from a $3 protractor at Hobby Lobby.  You could try to degree it.  I have a small test light that lights up when the points close (or is it open?)....   either way...

Have you checked the timing advanace with a strobe light?  I'm a notorious cheapo but the few essential tools I found out I needed were are:

- inductive timing light
- torque wrench
- Morgan Carbtune

just a few thoughs..
