« on: January 27, 2010, 03:40:24 PM »
i am going to bob the rear fender on my k4 750 and i'm wondering if anyone here can tell me how to roll the egde to make it look more professional? i dont really have any metal working tools or a torch. the rear fender is just way too long looking with the airtech cafe tail i have.

Do a search on cutting or shortening the rear fender.  Haven't done it myself but some have shortened it by cutting either the inner fender or under the seat to shorten it from the other end and leaving the factory rolls in place at the back.

+1 but it still leaves all of the mounting holes from the tail light.

if your just shortening it I would cut a little about the seam then re-weld it back up. That might not work if your not keeping a kinda similar shape.

i've actually cut it already, i just dont like the raw edge that was left after the cut. i want to actually roll the edge so that it matches the rest of the fender, just the edge where i cut

i cut on a badly rusted fender first, before cutting into the nice one thats on the bike  :D i want to make sure i know what i'm doing before i cut on the nice stuff. i remember using an old wooden baseball bat to roll a fender lip to get a little extra clearance on a lowered car, you'd just put pressure on it as you steadily roll it around the wheel opening.

Is the fender chromed?  If so, you won't be able to roll the edge without messing up the chrome.  That aside, it'll be hard to roll the edge without either a specialty tool or a torch.  If you still have that welder, you could weld on some rod stock to give you a nice edge and then refinish the fender.

Try this,
get a piece of flat bar, grind to match fender radius, and be square.
draw a line about 3/8  or 1/4 from fender edge with morphys or dividers.
start in the middle hold fender firmly and start to tap over the 3/8 part till it is about 90 degrees, then move flat bar or and repeat.
when you get into the sides (after middle is complete), regrind and square up the flat bar (1in or 1.25 should work here), and finish corners to 90 degrees.
when the whole cut is at 90, flip fender, put on a wood block, and gently hammer the edge down to flat..

 good luck....

nah TipperT, the more i look at it the less i like it. i will be keeping the grab bar but the fender will get bobbed and i'll just drill new holes to mount the tail light, then i'll weld nuts on the underside of the fender so it will bolt back on like factory.

Works surprisingly well. You can't even really notice that its not a factory rolled edge!

Not yet, the cops aren't dicky to motorcycles up here.  When I first put it all together I thought about it for a sec but took the wait and see approach.  The plate is just visible from the seat of a car.

I bobbed the front of the fender on my 550 and moved it. No rolling necessary  ???
