My seat foam has got dandruff?
« on: January 09, 2006, 04:18:17 AM »
Actually, two of them have. I bought a couple of cheap seats for my 750's, a K1 seat and a K2-6 seat, both with good pans, and torn/split original covers. I bought a new cover for the K1 seat, but I've noticed a bit of yellow "snow" (not that yellow snow!) over the battery, tool tray etc, where my foam has gone a little hard and has started to shed?

Nothing apparently serious, the seats are both comfy and pliable, except that I don't like this yellow dandruff that's emanating from it? That guy on Ebay who restores K0 seats for megabucks says he uses some kind of solicone product to "seal" the foam, which I assume means to stop it from shedding, but I don't know what brand, so I thought I'd throw it out to you experts? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I have gone the easy way with it, closing all the holes with duct tape... I don't want to rebuild my seat because it has the original cover in great condition. Maybe in the future, when the foam rots out completely...

Terry, have you checked for mice infestation! otherwise it means the foam is degrading and turning back to its constituent crap and there aint no cure

Terry- The seat on my 350f project bike was terrible, sat outside for God knows how long with a torn up cover. I cut the padding down the other day to make something of a cafe seat out of it. The loose crappy stuff you mentioned didn't go very deep, only 1/4" or so even on mine. The foam underneath was real nice, solid and pliable. If you have the seat cover off, maybe you could get by with just skimming the top bit of foam off, probably won't take much.

Terry, what you need to do is drag that ass off the seat when you need to let off them nasty assed vegemite farts! Your seat will thank you even though your underwear still takes the full brunt of that chemical attack!

Terry, take any PVA adhesive and water it down about evens or two to one and paint the foam. This acts as quite a good sealer and should stop the dandruff. (You could even try it on your head)

Woohoo! Thanks John, I'll give it a try, I've got some PVA glue out in the garage, I knew that eventually someone would come up with a sensible solution! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Terry,
If your better half is crafty, get her to duck into Spotlight and buy some Spray on Craft Glue.

Its a bit like contact adhesive, spray it on/in the holes where the dandruff is coming from, wait till it gets a bit tacky, then pack the hole with a bit of redundant underwear, trim off excess when fully cured - about 12 hours.

It will seal most holes for you....

Dandruff solved, and you can sniff the glue while you're at it..

Poly vinyl Acetate. Here you go Raul, educate yourself mate. To be honest, all I knew is that it's used commonly for glueing wood, but I try to stay away from woodwork, as I'm crap at it, and wood splits too easily for my liking, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Well as much as I enjoy sniffing glue (or whiteboard markers, they're my inhalant of choice) I'm gonna go with John Bakers cunning plan, as I want to pull the foam off the pan and repaint it any way, I'll carefully remove the foam, give it the old PVA treatment, paint the pan and fit the new cover that Clyde sold me, and my K1 seat will be right, then I'll need to look at that K2 seat with the big split in the middle and see what i can do with that, as it tends to grab my enormous testicles when I go to get off the bike? If it wasn't so damn hot here, I'd wear pants! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Okay, so i finally levered my ass off this chair and went for a drive to the Clark Rubber store, bought some spray adhesive for glueing the new cover to the seat base, some PVA glue, and some really thin (3mm) shiny sided foam.

I went home and started to remove the old K1 seat cover and URRRGGGHHH, the base was really, really rusty! Well so much for "one cover off, one cover on, ride the bike an hour later", boo-hoo! (not that that was ever gonna happen!)

Ok, so I removed the cover and foam, took the rusty base out into my driveway and sandblasted it back to bare metal, then spot-welded some metal beading down one side where the rust had eaten it pretty bad. I found some "rust-convertor" stuff that apparently stops the metal from ever rusting again, so brushed some on, then hung it to dry. (only around 70 deg F today, so I'll leave it overnight)

I got the bottle of PVA glue and poured some into a bowl, then mixed in some water until it was a nice thin consistency, and brushed several coats over the top of the foam, then turned it over and started to splotch the pva onto the underside. Problem was, the K0/K1 foam is like that "egg box" waffle style foam underneath, and the task of brushing on a couple of coats of PVA seemed too hard for my lazy ass, so I filled up a squirt bottle with the mix, and just sprayed a couple of coats on.

By this stage, I was covered in #$%*e, sandblasting grit was atacking every orifice, not to mention chunks of rusty seat base, and I'd stained my dainty fingees with rust-convertor, before sticking them together with PVA, so I gave up for the day and went inside for a shower and a bottle or two of Strongbow cider. I'll tell you all tomorrow how it ended up! cheers, Terry. ;D

No worries Raul, I should have taken some pics of the seat from the moment I removed the cover, it would have been a good "before and after" thing, I'll do that instead with the K2 seat, as it's in a similar condition. Cheers, Terry. ;D
