Which carbs should I keep
« on: February 17, 2010, 05:38:03 AM »
Ok folks, I have two sets of carbs and need to sell one set to fund more parts for the project (1975 cb550f.) I have the original carbs for the bike (069A) and a nicer, cleaner set from an older bike (022A.) Is there a performance difference between these racks, or should I just keep the cleaner set and part with the stocks?

Performance differences will dependmore on the jetting in these two carb sets rather than the carb bodies.

Slightly rich means power, slightly lean means slower, but with fuel economy.  Can you provide a jetting comparison?  Don

I think the 069's are 98/38 and he 022's are 100/40 (not positive on the 40)

Richer does NOT mean more power. Just as leaner does not mean slower. In most cases, it is opposite. The problem comes in when you get too lean. From a performance stand point, I would rather run slightly lean then slightly rich.

Not really always the case... running lean can gain power at the cost of engine life then if you lean it too much you start losing power. Running rich also doesn't always mean you are gaining power either.

I agree though without knowing the difference in the size of the carbs themselves and how they are jetted it's kinda hard to tell which would be better. Plus it depends on the rest of the setup you plan on using? Going for super high performance or just mildly modded street bike?

EDIT: Haha Inigo Montoya beat me to it!

Honestly,

I just want to ride the damn thing about 20 times a year. I will be running pods as well. so I was thinking the 022's would be better.

If it was me, i'd clean up the original carbs, jet them for the pods and go that route. Unless someone on here can say "yes i've used those carbs on that year of bike and they work great..."

Any time you change it from original there are going to be extra hurdles...jetting for the pods is gonna be a pain as it is...let alone with carbs that didn't come on that bike. At least with the stock carbs you can maybe find someone with a similar setup on here at a similar elevation and whatnot that can give you a good starting point for what size jets to run. You'll have to do fine tuning but you'll get in the ballpark a lot easier.

I'm not saying what you SHOULD do, just saying what I would do is all.
