Finally got me a CB 750

After many months of looking for one that was within my budget and still in good enough shape to warrant buying it......I bought a 76 750.

It has some issues in the starter circuit..the starter button dont work, the double decker seat doesnt have a cover on it.....it wont be going back on anyway, and it needs a good going thru.

I just about had it running this evening. I put the battery on charge while I went thru the wiring behind the side cover. Also took the battery box out and gave it a good scrubbing and some new paint. Took out the outside 2 spark plugs....I dont have an 18mm spark plug socket.....and the 3/4" deep well I was using wouldnt get in far enough to get the middle 2 plugs out. I cleaned the 2 plugs with electrical contact cleaner and give them a good scrubbing with a wire brush. When I checked the gap it was barely a .020, so I opened them up to around .030.

Isnt the gap supposed to be between .028 - .032?

After putting the battery back in, put some fresh gas in it and tried cranking it by jumping the solenoid......then realized that the switch key must have to be turned to the first position instead of the 2nd ::)

By this time the battery is about dead, so I start kicking it. I got it to sputter a few times and actually run for about 5 secs, but with it being cold out and not sure of the gap on the inside plugs....thats all I could get it to do. It backfired a couple of times and sounded like it blew the tin off of my shops roof :o bY this time Im give out so I put the battery back on the charger and will try again tomorrow.

Gonna go tomorrow and get a new set of plugs and an 18mm plug socket so maybe I can hear the beast come to life.

Sorry for the book but Im just excited about getting the bike and "almost" getting it running. :D I plan on doing it up Cafe style.

What a nice set of rusty pipes, Wire brush, steel wool and paint black should do the trick.  ;D

Other than the seat and front fender missing, it don't look to bad, good buy for $200.

Good luck with it,  keep us posted.

Yeah they are pretty rusty ;D Im not sure about the header section but the rear section used to be chrome. I think I'll take them off and have them media blasted and then a good coat of black.

I have the front/rear fenders and tailight.....although the rear fender and tail light wont be going back on. The front is in decent shape. Man my leg hurts....Im going to have a bruise from hitting the oil cap.  :D

Im also gonna look for a set of forks. I want to do away with the gaiters but the chrome looks pretty bad underneath.

Anybody know the part number for the fork seal/cover/boot that just covers the seal area? I looked awhile back when my buddy was wanting to do away with his gaiters but couldnt find any. Arent the ones on the later models....what is it 78 and up like that?

I wish I could find one at that price, I fancy building a drag bike for next year, a bike like yours would be a good start.

two broken shins??

does this refer to the unfortunate mishap of trying so hard to kick the bike into life, you forget all manner of self preservation and damage yourself, so then you can't kick it for a few days, until all your leg muscles have recovered, or at least stopped cramping..

been there and definitely done that, nothing wrong with sheer enthusiasm and raw excitement, but for an old guy I should know better......

Actually my shins are OK.......its my lower thigh behind and just above my knee. I guess it hit the oil reservoir cap a few times.

It's like getting your shoulder shocked by a SG blast then knowing your going to do it all again, the pain the pain, but the rewards are sweeter......particularly to hear something roar into life......knowing you were its creator... :) :) :)

You have to start some where and you have a good starting point with your $200 bike, like I said, "wish I had it".

I built a CR750 race bike for my mate, although it was a runner it was rough and cost him £450 ($790).

By the time it was completed with a stock motor it had cost us  £7,500 ($13,125).

It depends how much you are prepared to shell out for the bike of your dreams, the completed cost has doubled with race motor.

Was it worth it ?  you tell me....http://www.mypages.co.nz/~andyf/Honda.htm then click on the CR750 project bike.

Mine is the bike on the left on the opening page,  the rest of the site is Andys and well worth a look.

Thats a sweet CR Sam.

I know all about spending the money on a ride. I dumped about 16K into a 59 VW Bug. Rebuilt it from the ground up. Did a Semi Custom on it. Was it worth it?.......Why Yes!  ;D

Make sure your battery is holding a charge before trying to start it again.  These bikes won't run without power from the battery, so you could end up kicking all day for no reason. :'(  Good find, though.  I paid $250 for my K1 two years ago that had been sitting for about six years, and it's been my daily rider and endless supplier of joy and frustration ever since ressurrecting it.

  Sam,

Only one word to describe the bike and the site. AWESOME!!!! I kinda browsed through
for now but, I'll be back!!! As I said in another thread, I was stationed in Japan in the Air Force
when the 1st 750 came out and I can tell you, I was totally impressed. The thing alot of people
didn't know at that time was that Honda had already been racing four and six cylinder machines.
So, they already knew how to build them, all they had to do was convert them to the streets.

After many months of looking for one that was within my budget and still in good enough shape to warrant buying it......I bought a 76 750.

A guy at work has had it for over a year and got aggravated with it. He would come down at lunch and talk with me and my buddy....who has the 74 750.....asking questions about wiring, etc. He wanted to sell it at one time for $450, but I couldnt swing that much. Last week he comes down and says he has to get it out of his yard.....what would we give him for it.

My buddy said he didnt want to insult him by pricing his stuff and asked what would he take for it. He replied back with "You wont insult me".....so my buddy offered him $100. He got a look on his face like "No Way"...so I shoot $200 at him and he said sold.  ;D All my buddy wanted it for was the chrome pieces on the motor to put on his.

Well I heard it run this evening ;D Not for long.......couldnt get it warm enough to stay running fro more than a minute or 2 at a time. Finally got tired of kicking, plus the bruise the size of a baseball on the back of my leg kept wanting to reunite with the oil reservoir cap :D

My buddy brought out a 18mm plug socket and a set of semi-used plugs. We changed the old ones out and within 5-6 kicks the beast roared to life for a little while. I still cant get it to start with the starter. It will sputter once and awhile using it but if I get on it and kick it it does alot more sputtering. What gives ??? Is it because Im jumping the terminals on the solenoid....because the starter button on the controls doesnt work? I even took the bike battery out and hooked up a car battery to it with jumper cables and it still wouldnt fire good. Starter spins the engine fine.  ???  ???  ???

I did find some major hacking on the ignition switch. At some time, one of the POs had moved it up to the handlebar clamp and I bet there were 4 splices in between the switch and the harness plug ::) Gonna have it re-wired at work tomorrow...the way it should have been done to start with.

At least I got to find out it actually will run tonite. That megaphone sounds good too ;D

Congratulations,

Rub some Goanna oil on the bruise it will help a lot...

Ignition sounds a bit sus, as well, battery may not have a lot of life in it either..

If the bike runs for a minute or two, then dies - try letting it warm up without touching the throttle after it starts if you can, just use the choke to let it find its own rhtythm - mine does the same... coughs splutters, runs rough then very quickly clears its throat, then I slowly back off the choke..as the idle picks up...

Whats the gap on your points, and have you adjusted anything yet ???

Battery is new.......maybe 3 months old. Im hoping a "new" set of plugs is gonna help. I've got the points set at .010. Havent checked the carbs yet except for checking the bowls to make sure they werent gummed up. Gas that was in it was fresh also.
