Sidecover restoration . . . the "anti-bondo"
« on: June 01, 2008, 10:43:30 AM »
Hey all, I've picked up a few extra sets of '71 to '76 sidecovers to repaint and flip for some extra summer project cash. A few of them have had the 750 four badge area smoothed over (with bondo I expect). Any advice on getting these back to stock?  I dont want to just stick the badges over them so thats not an option. Is there any chemical stripper that would get the old crud paint off and maybe remove the body filler as well? or am I stuck sanding? Any tips?

no expert here but i'd go along with picking the bondo out with a putty knife. once you get a corner out the rest ought to pop out fine.  for the paint, i'd be leary of using a remover as that plastic is old, brittle and expensive to replace.  i worked with andy on his side covers and we did well with a random orbital sander and A LOT of hand sanding.  then i bought some two part putty filler and did the fill, prime, sand, fill, prime, sand routine.  any way you look at it, it's labor intensive so as a psuedo-businessman, watch your hours.  don't know if this helps but good luck!

I had good luck punching a nail where the original holes were on the back of them...  Popped off a big piece...

Awsome, thanks guys. I'm going to try and pop the junk out from the back side through the badge mounting holes, I'll let yall know how it works. I'll also try the bumper stripper. I've got a nice nice nice set of K0 sidecovers that someone buggered with crap paint and its too thick to sand (i'd be sanding till the fall) so i'll try the bumper strip on those. Thanks again!
