White smelly smoke
« on: March 17, 2010, 06:10:55 AM »
So I finally got my '76 550 going after a loooonnng hibernation. It's blowing alot of white smoke that is fairly smelly. I've replaced the air filter, plugs, and the carbs are clean and rebuilt. I'm thinking it's maybe just burning off carbon or oil built up over the years? I put in seafoam in the gas and oil and I guess it's helping to clean that gunk out? Any tips or advice?

Well the seafoam will certainly clean things out. When was the last oil change though? If the hibernation was quite a few months, it could be burning off condensation in the oil.

White gray smoke can be oil, did you do a compression test?

If CT was good probably just temporary.

Rich carbs usually produce a lot of soot, put a piece of paper behind the exhaust.

Mouse urine in the exhaust being vaporized.   :D

That would account for the "smelly".

Seafoam burns white. Run a tank through without it and see if the smoke is still there.

ride it.  get it real hot.  do an oil change.  fill up with gas but no more seafoam.
yes, the seafoam can create the white smoke, but so can H2O in your oil, or a white mouse being vaporzed. ;D

new oil. fresh gas. ride.

Good feedback guys! I forgot to mention i already changed the oil. I put in about two gallons of gas on initial start up and then put in about a half bottle of seafoam. So about 5 ounces or so. I'm thinking that I oversaturated my mixture with the "foam" hence the pluming white smoke. Once I get home tonight I'll make sure and dump in at least another two gallons ( I burned through at least a gallon and a half because I had to switch to reserve) I'll do the paper test to see if it's blowing soot. I definitely know I'm going to need to replace the exhaust seals at the head because I could see last night it was puffing out from there a small amount.

Thanks again!
