Electronic Ignition

What are the advantages of me trying to put in an electronic ignition on my stock 1973 CB350F ? Somebody adviced me to put this in http://jerryscyclesvintageparts.com/HONDA-CB350F-400F-DYNA-S-Electronic-Ignition-P124631.aspx for better performance and reliability.

Incidentally the bike seems to die and not start up again when heated up. To the point where I have to push start her.

Do a search from the main page for "dyna ignition" or "dyna-s".

There have been many, many opinions, and a lot of technical discussion about the Dyna-s ignition in previous threads.  If you do buy one, don't get it from the link you posted.  I believe Z1 Enterprises still sells them for $125.

The main advantage is that you don't have to adjust the ignition timing after you set it once. The stock points do wear slowly from the constant sparking.
The main disadvantage is that the Dyna S uses a fair bit more electricity than the stock system - the CB350 doesn't have much extra to spare for this. This is because the Dyna has a very long dwell: the coils are powered basically all the time with a very short time of "disconnetion" for spark production. Points power the coils about 2/3 of the time and the dwell time (or angle - ie the degrees of crank rotation that the points are closed) is somewhat adjustable by varying the distance the points open. If the Dyna electronics fail you're stopped until you replace it or reinstall points. The CB350 can not provide enough power for the 3 ohm coils available for Dyna systems and you must use 5 ohm stock or Dyna coils.

Hondaman makes and sells an ignition module which keeps the points but drastically reduces the power switched by them, meaning they don't wear much at all. This system keeps the stock dwell angle (and adjustability) while almost eliminating periodic timing adjustments. Plus you can just disconnect it and go back to "normal" should the electronics module fail.

Hondaman's set up is cool.

I have 3 including one on a 400 so very similar.

Better priced then a Dyna. with a fail back feature.
