...fresh from the machine shop. One is a stage 1 and the other is stage 2...there is one more stage available ;). Both of the owners are members here. If any is seriously interested in this kind of work please let me know.

Hmm, still working towards a level of competency that would allow me to get AT the ports for you to work on.  ;D
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Mike, do you have pictures of the "before"? To be honest, I can tell the difference as I've never seen a head before porting.

Hi Mike,
Looks really good. Is the top picture the intake and the bottom picture the exhaust? Did you just clean the casting up? Do you think on the intake port if you pin punched in a circle diameter, would this help atomize the fuel better? I have done port work on racing motors before, but it was always experimental. Also, what kind of cam would you run with that for the street?

From what I have read and experiences there is no evidence that supports a rough finish produces better atomization. Jerry Branch's work in the 60's and 70's shows that the air/fuel mixture basically doesn't even touch the walls of the port and very, very little atomization occurs until the end of the compression cycle. Personally I think alot of rough finish port guys say it is the best because you eliminate alot of finish work and charge the same price. ::) In general I recommend a Megacycle 125-65 cam as it has good lift without to much duration that provides nice acceleration and retains good bottom end. It is also not to hard on the rocker arms. A 125-75 or Harman F grind is good also.

On the first lot of photos, has any material been polished off the exhaust to make it a larger diameter?? or is this just the impression because it is so clean, and what is the blue stuff ??? ???

how did you get those heads that clean ???

and how did you get photos of my intake and exhaust in the second lot of photos?

on second glance, sorry not mine, mine look much worse than that.... :D :D

Yes,material has been removed from the exhaust port. The blue stuff is Dykem (machnists dye). I put it on so I can match the port exit to the exhaust gasket ID. The heads are hot tanked and bead blasted. As for the third question....... hmmmmmmmm- must be my mystical powers. :D ;)

Thanks for posting the pics, Mike. Gotta say that the close up shots of the ports and valve seats don't show the complete story of the work you do. I send ya crusty, oily, beat looking heads and you send back a head that I don't even recognize. EVERYTHING clean and inspected and any trouble spots either fixed or pointed out. Ready to paint or just bolt straight on. I've got two machine shops nearby that do good work and they will do exactly what I tell them, but they don't know the ins/outs of these motors and I am grateful for the peace of mind I get from having you do the work. I can't fathom the idea of going through the trouble and expense of rebuilding a 30 year old motor, boring out cylinders, and then cutting costs by skimping on the headwork.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

Hey Mike, that is really a big difference. How do you clean those ports? Just with the hot tank, or do you use a soft wire wheel inside? Feel free to share your secrets as long as you don't have to kill me afterwards... ;-)

I haven't ported my CB350 resto's head. They were slightly cleaner than the ones in your picture, and as it is nothing but a workhorse I just left them like they were. But rest assured that, when the day comes to rebuild my CB750 engine, I will consider to send you the head -the engine's head, I mean-. If shipping would not be so expensive...

Thank you Sean. You are not afraid to spend some money and I truly appreciate it. I will always give any head sent to me the best service possible as well as honest assessment. I should take a pic of my workshop now....there are 6 CB heads sitting there in various stages of completion.

Don't worry about the shipping Raul..it's not that bad..concentrate on the product. Anybody that still loves these bikes are my personal friend even though I probably will never meet them. All you guys are the best....plain and simple. BTW...The heads are hot tanked and bead blasted(with all threaded holes closed with bolts).

Please forgive my dumbness, what does HOT TANKED mean, because anything I can do to get my head looking half way decent would be a huge improvement (the bike I'm talking about)..

thanks for your pictures, it shows what a fine craftsman you are....does that get me any brownie points? :D :D

MRjeck,

Do you do head fin repair?  See picture of my 70' Sandcast head with broken fins.  Previous owner was attempting to do some type of repair.

Ed,
I was at a welder this morning looking to have fins on a cylinder repaired. His solution was to build up the aluminum with his TIG welder then reshape them.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)
