Started to rebuild my CB650C
« on: January 23, 2006, 08:15:02 AM »
Hello all,

I just wanted to give a quick introduction.  I have an '81 CB650C that I am starting to rebuild.  I bought it a few years back, took my roadtest on it and then it died.  I was in college then and did not have time or a place to work on it.

So far I have bought the rebuild kits for the carbs and have pulled them off the bike.  I started soaking the internals from carb #4 last night.  I was really surprised how clogged up the jets were.  Hopefully, the soaking will clean them up.

I am thinking of putting some kind of sealer in the tank.  Have to do a little research on which type to use.

Then the last thing I have to do is replace the alternator rotor.  I  got the bike running enough this summer(probably way the jets are so clogged) to do the electrical diagnostics and found the rotor to be bad.

Hopefully after all this work I will have a running bike.

Gregg

Hi Gregg,

I have an 81 CB 650 Custom, got it last summer, passed my road test on and it still going.  I am working on reviving it after sleeping outside for the winter and  have had to do a bunch of work on it, mostly brakes and electrical (it was under a porch, and under a bike cover, but the brakes still are in bad shape).  I haven't taken apart the carbs yet, thinking about tackling them this year.  Where did you get the rebuild kit?

Also, have any pictures?  Keep us posted on the progress,

Rob

My father has an '80 CB650 on which I'm currently doing some carburetor surgery. Where did you get your carb kits? I need all the little bits- o-rings, gaskets, etc- except for the float needles, as I got those from a local shop. I imagine a complete kit will still include the needles, but I suppose I can either hang on to those as spares or sell them separately.
Thanks,
Nick

If you go with a kit that includes needles, check the current vs. kit needles with a drill bit gauge. This was suggested by a member (kghost I think?) and to my surprise, found the kit needles to be of a different profile, much slimmer toward the low end of throttle settings and ran rich. Not to say you couldn't use them, but it did affect tuning. I went back to the stock needles and they tuned-up nicely.. by my standards anyway.  ;D
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

I got the rebuild kit from partsnmore.com  They were $16 a piece.

Thanks for the heads up on the needles I will check them before reassembly.  I have been soaking one carb a night and I am going to try an reassemble one tonight.

On a different note, last night I realized that the tubes that connect the carbs together have a broken fitting.  The fitting is a black plastic tee.  Does anybody have a suggested place to find a replacement?  Maybe something down at the hardware store will work?

I don't have any pics yet but, I will take some and post them up.
