I recently ordered 2 clutch cables from David Silver in England as I have had great service from them before and the price compared to the Honda Shop thieves here in New Zealand is about a quarter.
Anyhow one cable arrived on Saturday, joy of joy I'm back on the road.....but not quite.
On comparing the new cable with the old one I see that the new one is about 6inches shorter?
Well I'm a believer in DS ability to supply the right part so I attach it to the handlebar lever then go downstairs to attach it to the activating lever......nah....wont reach.
I tried every possible way of threading it down to the activating lever but still way too short.
I emailed DS and full marks to them for getting back to me so quickly but they say this is the standard original Honda clutch cable supplied to English and Australian CB650Z models!
OK I know my bike is a little special being a retired Police machine but under all that stuff is a stock 1979 CB650Z model Honda. :(
DS asked for my engine/frame numbers which I supplied, this will of course tell them that the bike was built in Japan but I still see no difference in my Z model height or length to any other Z models I have seen.
I have stock standard handlebars so that isn't the answer, I'll keep you all posted on my progress on this as it has me scratching my head.

Oh yeah I ordered 2 cables as I had a feeling that the cable also fitted my partners Suzuki GSX400L....and I was right ;D.
But I've got a second one coming soon and I really fear it will be too short again.
I don't suppose any 650 guys'n gals have a clutch cable off the bike (Z model) that they can measure, my old one was 1410cm long (55 1/2 inches) and the new one was 1150cm (44").

Hush - I had the same issue with DS for my CB750 clutch cable just last month. I ordered a K2 cable, but should have orderd a K3 cable. I didn't think there'd be a length difference - but it was about 6" too short. I have low bars fitted and it JUST fits. If I pull the bars to LHS the cable is tight. So - without a thread highjack - I too would be keen on some feedback - wot is the length of a K3 cable supposed to be and a K2 for that matter...?

No worries Nancy, but surely they didn't design "colonial" clutch cables!
By the way, nice to see another Kiwi on here...I think that makes about 6 of us. ;D

Hi Hush - also,...wot have you done for tyres recently? I'm due to replace both for 1st time. Went to one of those Honda thieves you mentioned and was quoted:
Frt 3.50x19  $245.00
                                     Rr 110/90x18  $259.00about $260/$240 for rear/front Metzelers. Is this on par with norm for these bikes do you think?

OK I was halfway back through my project build looking for the tyres I bought when I realised that I keep a running cost register in the back of my Clymer manual.
I'm running a Metzler 350/h/19 on the front which cost $215 fitted by the local Suzuki dealer.
On the back it's a Metzler ME55 120/90/18 which must be old stock cos that's the way they used to mark them, cost $219 fitted by the Hastings Honda shop.
These were the tyre sizes recommended to me by a guy who works at Hastings Honda and has a shed full of SOHC4's in mint condition.
I would have liked to squeeze a 130 on the back but wasn't sure if it would clear the swingarm pivot, maybe next time. ;D
What I did find was when you go into a bike or tyre place and they come up with some outlandish price, always say "Is that the best price you can do"? I found this usually has them scuttling off to find the manager to see if they can slice a few bucks off.
I watched that programme where the guy never ever paid full price and thought I'd give it a go, worked well and my FFM K3 crash helmet which was $200 was reduced to $100 plus a new clear visor so give it a go mate. ;)

I just reaslised you said you had a 110 on the rear!
Mate that to me would be seriously under tiring a 750, my 650 came with one of those and the tire guys couldn't believe it so I'd ask the 750 guys on here for their views on this before you buy.

Yeh, seems a bit skinny to me - I agree. Looks a bit lame from the back too! My son comes round and parks his Honda V1000 Firestorm next to it - his rear tyre is about double my width. Makes the CB750 look lame.
But, it's running a 110 now and I noted that Andy750 had a thread running last month and was advocating 110 vs 120 for the rear. Dunno - I'll keep asking the boys...anyway, seems like the price Ize quoted is in cooee. We are being ripped off in NZ though..they would be about $70 in US$. Why does it jump to $240NZ$..big margin and a/or a lotta import costs..

Next to my sons CBR400RR my rear tire looks like a biscuit ha ha, yeah wonder what it would cost to import a tyre?
I got a full set of 4 into 2 exhaust delivered to my door from Texas and it cost about $200 kiwi.
I get most of my bits from David Silver in England and they usually get me the parts within 4 days from across the world, local Honda shop can't beat that and prices are about a third of quoted NZ shop prices even with parcel postage....yeah we being ripped off alright.
