Adventure Rides
« on: January 25, 2006, 03:54:49 PM »
I don't know if you folks are aware of this site, but it has a great collection of stories involving
rides that go beyond trips to the grocery store or Sunday rides.  The link below is one that
has kept me reading for the last five days....up to 183 pages I think now. :o

He basically started across the Soviet Union from east to west with a sidetrip through Mongolia.
From there it gets even more interesting.  He is now just completing one of the last parts up
through Africa......sorry on a BMW.

Hundreds of pics and a terrific read.....probably cause me a new visit to the eyedoctor! ::)

The main forum has a lot more trips.....

suppose you've read/seen "long way round"? - since you're a reader it's worth reading - i haven't seen the documentary yet...

I bought Glen's book about his last ride.  Amoungst other fun things he was
captured by Columbian rebels and almost killed. :o

I haven't started on the book yet but I'm told it is a terrific read.  Looking at
some of the pics on the site about his current ride you'll understand why a
750 would not be the ideal bike.  He was followed across Siberia by a guy
in his 70's on a Honda goldwing though...gravel mud and all...wow. ;D

Great site, thanks for the heads up.

Me, I like to pretend I'm somewhere in Africa or South America as I head to the 7-11 to pick up some milk.  ;)

Great website and great stories. But I have to disagree about type of bike - sure its easier on a new BMW but I think you can travel on any bike.

For example Ted Simon rode a Triumph Bonneville in 1976 around the world (64,000 miles) - read "Jupiters Travels". Another guy rode a Yamaha FZR round the world in the fastest time. Then theres the guy whos driven all over the world on a Harley. My small efforts have been that Ive ridden over some rough roads and on beaches in Mexico on a round the country trip on a stock CB750 and it was fine - stood up to the beating. So I think any bike can be driven anywhere.....its all about comfort level :-)

Comfort level...and ...Sponsorship.
BMW infamously won the sponsor for Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman over another, forgotten sorry, manufacturer for their "Long Way Round" addy ride...

According to their accounts they encountered some pretty rough riding conditons - conditions i don't think i'd put any old streetbike to...
